cow stopped giving milk, HELP!!!!

I now have another problem. Many of you know that one of my 2 dairy cows calved on Tuesday and now she has stopped giving milk. Shut down. So took her to the vet and he gave her a shot and squirted this stuff up her nipples. He checked her for mastitus and she does not have that. Her utters are giving a squirt or 2 now but not enough to support a baby. This is not her first calve, she raised hers and 4 others 2 years ago. She did not have one last year and she will be 5 in September. What can I do to help her? Thanks

Mule, 1st thing I'd do is go get me a bottle and nipple and small bag of top guality milk replacer to feed the calf while you wait for the cow to come to her milk (if she's going to)....Wonder what the vet infused those 4 quarters with if she did not have mastitis?

I am already doing the milk replacer, he also suggested that I keep the calve with her and nursing. He said she did not have mastistus. Her temp that Saturday when she went was 102. It was 102 this morning. She is giving milk but only a squirt or two from each nipple. Her bag is tight but not hard and her nipples are soft. He is as puzzled as I am. Before the calf was born the milk would just squirt out when she laid down, then there was nothing and now just a little. Do you think that it will get better as she goes along?

Sounds like edema to me. A shot or 2 of Lasix should clear it up if it is.

Now one more question if salt intake is associated to edema what is the correlation of heifers having more edema problems than cows ? I was thinking it is because the mammary system is not fully developed yet, but I may be way off after reading this maybe they store salt differently than cows.. :?

I am thinking of changing my mineral and salt program to help eliminate edema in heifers but need to find the real cause of it first.

It isn;t just salt that causes it.
If you can ever figure out the cause of edema in heifers let the world know.
We've only had one heifer with edema in a long time, and she had edema when she freshened the second time too.
In a diary environemnt the heifers are all managed pretty much the same, as much the same as individual animals in a group can be. Every once in a while there will be a hiefer freshen with edema. I'm talking once a year or 2. Not enough to get any concrete handle on why. I usually just put it down to some individual animals are more prone to it then others. Now if I saw a lot of it I'ld sure start looking at the feed/mineral/nutritional side of things.
In other words, I don;t have an answer
