I had brought a bunch of cows that aren't working hard enough to spend another winter here up to the corral to eat hay for the summer.

One of them was complaining a lot today, and I took a look at her this evening, There's lots of food to be had, but when she was laying down there were a number of cud balls she spat out, and she wasn't chewing cud. just bringing some up, keeping it in her mouth a while, then spitting it out. before she managed to get up, I reached into her mouth and felt around (all of about 2 seconds) and didn't feel anything wrong, no swelling visible on the outside.. pressed up on her belly (for hardware disease).. didn't have any effect.., I fed the bunch of them, she'd eat a bit and spit some out... I separated her out and gave her the finest hay I have, she seemed happy about that... I haven't taken her temp, but she doesn't feel hot or look feverish, just having trouble eating... She did like apples too.

I'll see how she does on other hay, If I can get a halter on her she is sorta leadable, I might kick her back out on grass.. Not what I was planning on but it may be the cheap fix.

She's a 2009 model.

Any other ideas? Sore tooth seems like a likely suspect to me at this point.
 
She sure figured out a quick way to get put back on green grass! It's funny, she's vocal about it.. it's like she's complaining that I'm not feeding her, but the problem is she just can't eat... Anyhow, she's alone now so at least she can eat at her own pace...

I'd be suspicious of a chunk caught in her throat. How is she today?

Apple in throat happened to me once out of a wild apple tree. Couldn't eat or drink. Had to push it back down with a tube. Then she drank about a hundred gallons of water.
 
she's been fine since I put her on fine hay... sucker for the good stuff and knows how to get it?? I might put her back with the others again and see how that goes soon.

Had one choke to death on a potato once.. no time to do anything about it

I did try, but didn't get very far with it, and since she was doing better she's been pretty low on my priority list... She's eating some 10 year old hay with gusto now, she's in good shape again.. She's not the easiest cow to work with.

Maybe there was a blockage that went on down???A tough wad of hay she tried to swallow too fast,etc.I had one which was breathing hard once.Checked her and she had run a stalk of wingstem up her nose after I bush hogged the field.
