The Cow Ant, or Velvet Ant is actually a wasp. Have you ever noticed how long the stinger is on them. Next time you see one in the 1" range pin him down with a stick and look at it. It's about 3/4 as long as it's entire body. I see them all the time around here in late summer, mostly in gravel parking lots. Have you ever been stung by one ~ ouch! They are tough too, just try stepping on one....preferably while wearing shoes.

you got the right, ive stomped down hard on them, ,raise my boot up and they never miss a beat........ this is no sht. they will make a squeaking noise when your trying to kill them :P

Absolute truth...gotta get them against concrete or something and really mash and twist your foot to kill one....even then seems half of them will try to crawl off. Never been stung by one but can only imagine the paine.

We have velvet ants too, but the biggest I have ever seen was maybe 3/4 ". If I saw one that big, I would have to catch it in a jar to study it ...if one was climbing on me, I would freak. Jump in the pond or something.

i done some checking on the ant ... turns out they actually do squeak when you are killing one.. whew thats a relief :lol:
