i to am wondering if thats the cow.that had the low milk epd.she has great body condition.also has she calved in that picture.i was wondering that as well.scott
 
yes thats her AFTER calf.Took pic this morning along with bull pic.Neighbors say I feed and worry to much about cows.Cant stand to see something act hungary.

seems content so I will just keep an eye on him and her.Have more to calve in next couple of weeks.Will not turn bull in so quick next year.Did not expect him to start breeding right away,dont know why I thought that.JHH
 
I really like that cow. Breed her to a bull that throws a little less stature and tons of milk and is built like her and you'ld have some replcement heifers that would do the job for you.

I have more than few that look like this - do NOT EVER be fooled into thinking bag size equates to volume milk production.

That is one of the biggest fallacies in the business.

If your calf is not hungry I can assure you she is putting out.

Most of the herefords I have had had the opposite problem and sold early because of sack breakin down or tits so large calf couldn't milk, especially in hot weather. I'd keep an eye on them but I wouldn't be overly concerned.

A Hereford with excessively LARGE teats???? I have had sacks break down (on 12++ year old cows before); but I don't think I have ever seen a Hereford where the teats got too large. I had a Holstein/Angus cow with that problem and some older heavy milking Simmentals too; but a straight Hereford, no. Are you sure they weren't the old whitefaced Simmental/Hereford cross cows? I wouldn't use that seedstock supplier again.
 
Brandon - I have had 2 purebred herefords in the past 3 years with cokebottle teats so large I could hardly milk them out myself to haul them to sale. We bought them as bred cows and their teats/bags looked good before the milk came in. The calves could never have been able to suck those teats.
 
She is a nice lookin cow but I hate to say I think she is going to starve her calf. I had a cow like that once and the calf was drinking all the time..... and slowly starving. I got the pair in and gave the mother grain and all she did was get fat. It drove me crazy trying to determine how much milk she was producing so I seperated her from her calf for overnight. There wasn't much change at all in her udder so I then weaned the calf from its mother and started the baby on high protein calf pellets. The baby would not drink from a bottle and after tube feeding it for 10 days, just gave up on the milk and put out a bucket of water which she readily drank. The baby had its first bowel movement after three weeks of age.

If you really want to determine if the calf is getting enough milk, bring them in a small pen and look for evidence of calf poop. If you don't see any after a day or two... she is starving.

If thats the case ship the heifer and save yourself some headaches.
