cow has cracked hoove

I have a 10 yrs of old heifer cow that has had a cracked hoove now for about 8 months I have taken her to the vet at least 4 times on the last visit he put a wood block under the good claw to take the weight off the bad one but it doesn't appear to be getting any better she has had the block for about 2 months does it take this long for something like this to heal? he as cleaned it each time and given antibiotic it has rained here for the last 2 months I am sure that has a lot to do with it also. she is due to calf any day now I don't want to sale her she is my lead cow and has always been in good health and dropped good calves up to this point is there a special mineral that maybe I should be giving her she has access protein tubes salt and plenty water any help is appreciated

Heifer cow? Just had the vet here working on one of my bulls feet about 20mins ago. Sorry I don't have an answer for you on the specifics of your animal. The wet doesn't help for sure, and leaving the block on that long is too long IMO.. Heard you don't want it on much more than 4 weeks or so.

But I have noticed people on here always talking about sale-ing an animal.. You guy's do have the word sell down south right? As in you sell something, when it is for sale, right?. :???: ha

There's way to much to know to answer such a question on the internet. Infection? Location?

I put one back together with Belzona. Kept her isolated in the head gate and chute for 6 hours. Got to her quick when I saw all the blood. Apparently fast enough to keep infection from taking its toll. Gave her banamine, nuflour and pennicilin. She had a few more calves before I sold her.

Depending on where and which direction the crack runs also makes a difference. Sometimes they just need to grow out. And that can take many months. My cow has a crack that is still there after a year, but she is not lame on it.

Minerals make a huge difference with the health of their feet. My cattle were severely deficient in Selenium and Copper. Once I switched their free choice minerals to one that they would consume, I saw a huge improvement in their feet. But I also put Se and copper boluses in them. Plus Multimin injections. I do not recommend doing all of that with out testing for the deficiencies first. But they do need to be on minerals.
