What do you feed your cows , nursing calves and bred back?
Also what are you giving 1st time heifers @ 3rd tri ?
 
Pasture (in normal years), good minerals, salt and water. This yearpoor hay, mix30 supplement, good minerals, salt and water.

Nope, unless they are very, very heavy milkers and raising huge calves. Watch their body condition, that will tell you if they need any supplement. They should loose, normally, a little condition while they are nursing. That's what the dry period is for, so they can gain back the condition before calving the next year.

Our cows are on corn stalks/volunteer barley in the pivot during the winter, supplemented with alfalfa hay when we have bad storms. During calving (from about late February until they go out to summer pasture) they are on grass, but we don't have enough pasture here to support them, so they are supplemented with ground hay (combination of grass, alfalfa, and barley straw). We mix a little beet pulp in with the ground hay and a little silage (if we can get it). They always have loose mineral, salt, and plenty of water.
 
We suppliment feed alfalfa and a little cracked corn in the evening...keeps the girls comming to the barn for evening muster and inspection...third trimester we increase the protein intake. Nursing cows get extra minerals and a viatamin suppliment. We feed all the stock additional grain in the winter when the temps drop into the teens and below.

We make a point to not feed anything other than the bare necessities - grass / hay - some omneral and salt.

Corn when it drops below minus 30 or thereabouts.
