Hi, I have a holtein nurse cow that laid down and can't get up. She looks and acts fine , (eats good , bright eyes and attitude.) but she can't get up. Vet said it could be milk fever but probly not, another said it is probly a mineral thing. I have only had her about 2 months, so I don't know her history. I have a call in to the dairy she came from. any quess what she is lacking ?? I thought it may be the haylege but was told she is old enought to eat it. ( over 800 lbs.) I was also told not to feed to cattle under 600 lbs.

Had one like that with a broke leg. You'll probably have to get her up to know that. Have you tried palpating everything to see if you can find a sore spot? If it's pain related you could try a shot of banamine to see if it relieves the pain/swelling enough to get her up.

We need some more info, btw - age, how long she's been down, reproductive status (bred/open), etc, for starters.

Not sure I really want to now. I had a cow that got foot rot real bad. She wouldn't get up for nothing. Shot of banamine had her dancing in the streets in hours . . . kept her off the ground and functioning normally till the nuflor went to work.

In fact, FDA banned all extra-label use of flunixin because there were numerous cases of drug residues when it was given SQ or IM at a time when no withholding times were published.

i just got some two weeks ago and was told and it says to give it IM. i'll just pretend like i didnt see this thread.

well ive never used it before, but the cow i'm using it on will either be kept for a long long time or die so i'm not too worried about it. my question is why doesnt the vet know?

I give it orally, takes longer to work, but does the job! ;-)

HELLO.. is everyone missing the point here? Your vet may well be recommending it still because he knows you and knows you aren't going to treat the cow and ship her the next day.. or next week! It's the unknown period of withdrawl that has gotten it restricted! Soooo.. if you're NOT going to ship the cow to the auction barn, it's not a problem.
