I was wondering if everyone counts their cattle every day? I have done most of the feeding and taking care of the cattle this year. It takes me about all day if I count at each location. Grass is here they scatter every where and want come for feed or cubes now.
I know what some are thinking if I had kept them feed well last winter they would not be so hungry.
Reason for asking in the past did all feeding after dark and may account for them on week end. This year has been a day job and have done better or good calving and sickness.
 
after so meny years of having cattle.you get to where you can tell who is missing.an how meny are missing.the only time we count the cows an heifers is if we have a few ready to calve.wanting to make sure we dont have to go hunt cattle.i can tell if all the reg cows arnt up quick.an i account for the 1 thats supposed to calve tween now an june.less i miss my guess on her.now the calves we try to count when checking the cows.
 
Only way I can count them is when they go thru the chute. Never been able to count them. They just don't cooperate and refuse to stand still long enough.
 
For me it's usually more of an unconscious "seen her, her, and her... now where is _____?" than an actual counting. Esp with boss's dairy herd, there's no way I can count them individually as they come through the barn, but by the time the last cow has come through I know if we're missing someone and who it is.

That's my problem. They keep moving around.
But then I am not a very good counter anyway. Not good with A, B, C's either.

At least 3 times...when I get the same number 3 times, doesn't have to be in a row, now, then I call it good.

Every time I check during the summer, I count cows and calves. I usually check once a week in summer, sometimes 2.

During fall after calves are weaned and cows are on grain stubble fields, will count when I check, usually once a week.

Beginning in winter, will count everyday when cows are fed small amount of alfalfa in morning.

At start of calving season, cows are in a small pasture, and are not hard to find if one has wondered off to calve. I usually don't count at this time, because they all can be seen.
 
count them when we are calving. But usually have a list in my head that i know need to be seen to keep up with calving.

Calving thru breeding I see em all every day. sometimes count. Like someone said when I can count the right number three times in a row I call it quits.

Now I have a small herd and know most by name and sight from a long way off. This time of year I don't see em but once or twice a week.

When i was another mans cowboy and the groups were in fifty to a hundred, we made sure we got a count every time we saw em.
 
For whatever reason it seems I try to count everyday...Just habit I guess....Sort of like a friend I use to have that was a heavy beer drinker. Asked him one time if he ever counted how many he drank everyday. After a minute he said, "no never counted how many I drank but can always tell you how many I have left". :lol2:
 
I count everyday at least once, but we only have 10 so far.
When they calf, I'm going to have to take my shoes off to get the job done. ;-)
