This is just a reply to another poster who has some strong opinions on what we all should be growing.
First of all I don't know anything about cotton, except that I like Liberty overalls and t-shirts, but the overalls I'm wearing were made in Russia and bought at Wal-Mart and I guess that's another topic. But I'm sure that the state has used several of the tobacco settlement dollars to research the crop here.
Second of all I'm pretty sure from what my mom said about the areas of where she has saw it grown that it requires a different climate than ours in the mountains. Now I do know that for several years marijuana has been our state's number one cash crop so I guess that it does like the climate. I refuse to grow it illegally but there has been a lot of research dollars put to growing hemp here with a campain by actor Woody Somebody, you know that guy off Cheers. The logistics of regulating it is a little much. Tobacco as well as hemp-marijuana will be grown just not always by Americans even if I choose not to grow either.
Lastly, fault can be found with any crop. Wait till the goverment goes after food as a killer, wait a minute hasn't that already begun. Remember the feedlots and greenhouse gases and runoff. Cotton I'm sure has its down falls as well ,although you have made me aware that cotton growing is something I Ain't got a clue about. Enviromental concerns as dyes and grown in America and assembled by someone else, someplace else with little concern for their workers or the enviroment is about all I know about cotton but the same can be said about anything grown or manufactured elsewhere.
Big money will do what it takes to make big money and use emotional issues to better themselves. Tobacco is not a good thing to use but don't blame the auto worker for making that killer car or the feedlot for the killer Big Mac.
I like to watch anything grow from a seed to a plant and I especially like growing out calves. I can't wait to improve the genetics of my little herd to the point I can grow them out , sell them on the farm and still make a profit. I can't help but keep the best of them for myself though and I don't see that changing.
