Most of our pastures are fescue and last fall we no tilled Alfalfa, OG and Timothy to thicken them up. Alfalfa didn't stick Tim. and OG is coming in nice and filling the voids well. I would like to get some sort of clover or something that is perrinial. What are your suggestions?? Soil is clay and I'm in Northeast WV. I'm getting the pastures grazed short of the fresh spring growth now and ready to no till something in. Thanx for the help
 
Where I live, we never put alfalfa into clay soils - it seems to do better in sandy, rocky, well drained ground.

We have no tilled grass seed into pasture with pretty good luck - the clay ground gets orchard grass and brome. They do not seem to mind wet feet.

I tend to top it off in a couple of weeks with 100 pounds to the acre of N - waiting that short time seems to ensure the seed is sprouted and gets a little boost from the fertilizer.

When we put clover into the mix, we use plain old red clover. While your weather is probably different, the one thing we have found over time is the clover will choke out everything eventually and completely take over.

We cut it for hay a couple of times, but it is so hard to dry because of our relatively high humidity that we ended up plowing it down after a good round up - then we sent it back to orchard and brome after one year as an oat field.

It's good to hear from you. As far as the Alfalfa goes we've had good luck with it otherwise maybe the winter was a little too dry bad seed or what ever it was quite a few dollars down the drain though. we have some awesome alfalfa fields on the same type of ground. We did the pearl millett thing las year, we planted it into pastures in June but, the darn stuff has left the fields we planted with it looking like corn stubble and we used a "grazing" variety and kept grazing off/on until the first freeze on part of it.
What brand do u use?? on the clover that is. Thanks Bez
