Conneally Sure Fire--thoughts?

He seems a bit short to my newbie-ish eye. But I like the CED, DOC, and marbling. Thoughts?

I looked at the link I don’t like him or his dam that they have pictured but the steer they have pictured looks good. Are you using him as a terminal sire? All of us have a type we like he just isn’t the type I like.

Gizmom, could you elaborate on what you don't like about the dam? This is not at all for an argument, I really like learning about how folks judge cattle!

I was never good with giving reasons, but when I look at the cow I see a nice front but I don’t see her carrying her depth of body from front to rear, I also don’t see a lot of muscle in the lower quarter. I also like to see a cow being pictured as the dam of a herd sire to be in milk. I might have a totally different opinion if I saw the cow in production but from that photo I just wasn’t impressed. Like I said everyone has a different opinion of what their ideal cow looks like and for me she isn’t it.

I don't think you can compare those two photos Gizmon, the example you gave is of a very mature cow, the photo of the dam looks more like a heifer to me.

I agree if they are going to show a picture of the dam it should be a cow in production, heck I want to know what the cow family looks like once they have done something. I also agree the cow I showed isn’t a fair comparison she is 8 years old in that photo and has produced a calf every year starting as a two year old.

I do see the weird set on sure fires dam,thanks for the input.
I understand that everyone has their own type and kind that they prefer and I also understand I have a long ways to go in judging cattle! Lol

Well if they are out of a heifer they are out of a heifer, not much you can do about that. On the other hand it may serve to show what the heifer can do on her first calf. I do find that semen companies are very slack at updating photos in their glossy catalogues, they seem to just want to spend the promotion money once.

I think they may be GAR animals and I noticed the GAR pictures themselves were not their usual caliber. Wonder if the fires are affecting that. I know they lost hundreds of animals...

Is the second cow lacking what some call depth of rib? If I'm even using the correct term.

Yes, Sure Fire's Dam lacks body depth/rib and while her legs are long, I'd say she leans towards having a spindle type
of foreleg and narrow hock.
I believe she lacks over all width and suspect from the rear view her biggest fault would be a lack of rump width.
In my opinion Charlo would work well on this tall type of cow.

I Really like the Sure Fire steer Select has pictured a lot.

The other cow pictured cannot be ideal because she doesn't have 'fluffy hair'.... lol

My select sire guy was pushing him very hard on me, after seeing that picture of his dam. No way I would use him. Maybe she is just young, but I have commercial cows that are built way better than her.
