Newbie to the board. My son and I are new at showing beef cattle. Sunday he won his class ( commercial ). The judge comments were the calf won from her profile. He then said she disappoints from the back profile. I assume he meant width. Here is my question. Can anything I do improve this or is this a genetics deal. Thanks

mostly it is genetics. try to grow lots of fur to give yourself something to work

hair, feed and someone who knows what they're doing can help disguise a narrow heifer. What breed(s) is she?

It's ALL about genetics, but proper feeding and fitting can make some huge differences. If your heifer is a breeding heifer, it certainly could be too heavily muscled, or just show a very small vulva; nothing much you can do in either case. If the heifer is too narrow, lots of good workable hair is crucial. Next comes great clipping and fitting. You can also help increase the available muscle with standing her on a ramp, just as you would lambs or steers. A great nutrition program is also a must.

A plus is that you're on the right track. Watch, ask and learn. Congratulations on winning the class.

I noticed you were on the Breed Board as well. I did not know where to post. Thanks for the reply. She is Angus x. I will try to post a couple of pics after the holiday. She narrows in at the shoulder from the behind view. I have not seen either sire or dam. Feed Godfrey brand feed. Popular her in Ga. If its a feeding problem I can improve on I will. If its genetics tring to learn so as to make her offspring better. Thanks
