Remember, if it's not a black and white holstein, or jersey, I'm pretty much clueless. :oops: So, what it is? (Yes, I know it's a bovine. :o ;-) ). Or what breed is the dominant breed...or is there a dominant breed? Could he even be part red holstein?

Before the drought broke here a lot of beef breed calves were hauled to the dairy auction barns in Stephenville from outlying counties. Anything not holstein or holstein X used to be marked as jersey or jersey X on the sales tickets...at least now they've entered "red" and "black" as other "breed" categories into their computers :lol: I got this one right after "red" was entered as a category, so this is my only clue..."red." Duh!

What difference does it make. You got an animal that is probaly a bull and needs to be castrated before lilmac or someone else buys him for a herd sire.
 
I asked because I was curious and trying to learn. So again, I am asking, does anyone know the dominant breed of this calf...not what do you think of it, simply what is the dominant breed. A lot of these have been showing up at the sale barns here. I have Mr. La4angus' answer, such as it is. :roll: Anyone else?

As far as dairy breeding goes, could have some red holstein, ayrshire, or milking shorthorn. Or maybe some obscure breed like Scandinavian Red or something.

Looks dairy through and through to me. And if I'm not mistaken, there's some tufts on his head where his horns are. I'm not really sure what he is Alice - but I know what he isn't. He's not Jersey or a holstein/jersey cross. He's not pure holstein, red or black. He's not brown swiss and he's not a half/half swiss/holstein cross. I've seen all those crosses and he's not that.

He has enough white on him he's probably either predominately holstein or he's a ayrshire or milking shorthorn cross. Or I've seen quite a few ads in the dairy magazines for -I believe it is- a Norweigen Red cross. They also show up with a significant amount of white.

I suppose he could have some beef breeding in him, but it's not a significant amount. All the half dairy half beef calves I've had were solid (black) with little to no white. Besides that his phenotype isn't beef.
 
If milkmaid doesn't know or have an idea of what is the dominant breed I doubt that anyone knows.
Like I asked before, what difference does it make?

Thanks milkmaid, van, aero and randi. Your responses are extremely helpful. Now I have something to go on. My curious nature may get me in trouble sometimes, but I've had it all of my 54 years so I don't guess it's going anywhere.

When I saw your calf photo Alice, I knew I had recently seen a photo of a similar calf.
Sure enough, it was Randillas nice looking calf.
I agree that it could have some Maine in it.

Also thought of Holstein with Angus, since many dairies use an angus bull on their heifers - at least up here.
The neighbor next to us is using one that has the red gene and is getting some ( in my opinion ) really nice "red" holstein looking crosses.

And Alice, I for one appreciate curious natures.
I got a big one too.
Most explorers, pioneers, researchers and creative folks have them.

It could be what we use to call red-black or black-red, I don't remember which. Came from two black and white holsteins that carried the red factor. The calf was born with a redish cast, sometimes as the calf grew older it would lose the redish color other times it stayed that way for life. A famous holstein bull, Hanover Hill Triple Threat Red was a black bull with a hint of red. He is responsible for a lot of the genetics in the Red and White Holstein Breed today.
 
We used to have a red Jersey cow around here that threw several calves marked like that when using a big red white faced Simmental bull. There are probably several color crosses that CAN throw calves like that. Red Angus times a well marked Longhorn being one that comes to mind. Cute calf but I do hope he does not remain intact.
 
This guy is often mistaken for a Milking Shorthorn. He's pure Holstein from a herd of all red Holsteins.

Look at the ear on this calf. He really looks like a Beefmaster x Holstein, Brangus x Holstein or one of those two over a Holstein xJersey cow. Not enough ear to be my favorite which is Brahman x Holstein. There use to be alot of that cross go through Stephenville, but I havent seen one in several years. I have several I raised.
 
Also look at the black nose and consider the fact that in your area Holstein and Jersey are about the only two breeds milked. I use to hang around alot and never remember seeing any Milking Shorthorn, Swiss, Ayrshire or hardly any Red and Whites. Could still be wrong though.
 
Alice, if possible, the next time you go to that particular sale-barn perhaps you could eye-ball some of the rigs coming in to unload and see if any of those folks are carrying similar looking calves and ask them what it is they have on their trailers.

Just a thought, not trying to be a smart alec or anything.

come on guys an gals this is stephenville we talking about here.if that calf isnt off a stock cow for some reason or another.it has tobe crossed up with the dairy breeds.heck it maybe a f3 dairy breed calf.meaning it could still be a jerXhol.just his daddy maybe a crossbreed like his momma.
