How many on here use an antivirus program? I hate them. Mine always delays loading pages while it scans. I am thinking about unloading the nasty hobbit thing.

Also, I only have one failing :lol: , I cannot spell. Is there a spell checker on CT? I know I could copy it and put it on a board and check it but I never want to take the time for that.

I have wondered about my spelling. I have a memory that is beyond most. I can look at a picture and remember not only the picture but the words below it. When I was taking Entomology, I was looking through a book and saw a Wheel Bug. Below it were the words, "Wheel Bug, Arilus cristatus." We were on a field trip and a guy found a wheel bug. Held it up to the teacher and ask what is this? Before the professor could say anything, I yelled out, Arilus cristatus. The professor scolded me and said I was a smart azz. Of course he was right. People always hated me for having a good memory. I guess that is why I suffer from depression, low self esteem, introversion, etc. But the reason I cannot spell is becasue I can hardly hear. Never could. Congenital I guess. I spell by memory not the ability to sound out my words.

I dont use one but im very careful about the sits i visit or attachments i open. I also hate them. I believe if my mind can think and finger click faster than my computor can move then something must be wrong

I'm using Firefox for my browser, it automatically checks spelling on anything I type. For anti virus I use the AVG free version and Malwarebytes free version for anti malware. No computer expert, but seems to work fairly well.

I use AVG free edition for virus and malwarebytes for malware, haven;t had a virus in several years since I started using them. Some of the PC cleaning type deals hog resources and slow the system down horribly. I've been using the AVG one for about 6 months and don;t even know it's there till it reports something

AVG here too. I would definitely not uninstall your anti-virus.

I used to use AVG till it began using too many resources, and took too long to do it's scheduled scan. It wanting to install it's own toolbar and search apps was the last straw.

I use Kapersky now, since it came with this laptop---free for a year.

I use chrome as a browser--it has a spellchecker built in.

I have used AVG, Kaspersky, and all the others. The one I have found to be the best is Ad Aware by Lavasoft. It is a real rooter and since I am somewhat of a geek, I need something real strong.

Norton Internet Security.... Browse using Chrome, I guess that is where the spellchecker comes from.

I hate spell checkers. I can spell, but occasionally I want to imitate the way people really speak in my text. A spell checker won't allow y'all. Most CT members would be mute without Y'All. This is similar in its "annoyance factor" to GPS. When machines question my decisions, on grammar or directions, I get annoyed. When I get annoyed, tech dies. When tech dies, society collapses. My daughter's generation cannot spell. They were badly educated. At least in CA where she took elementary school. No phonics, just that ___ whole language thing. Spell check, if you have it, delete it. Or I will unfriend you.

Well, you misspelled 'because' in your first post, but that could have been a typo.

I have McAfee on this PC, have Norton on another; I think Norton is better. Grandson is banned from using this PC because he can't keep out of game sites. Some malware got on this PC last year because of that.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free, Antivirus and Antispyware all in one. Scans once a week by default, and doesnt use to many resources. Windows updates are more important than AV, but you should keep the AV too.

Save yourself some time. Delete all your pics, videos, songs, links, emails and addresses, delete all documents, then remove your hardrives, smash em, and do the same with the bios chipset on your MB, because that's what you'll end up with running around the internet with no AV at all. May not happen this week, or next, or even next month, but it's GOINGto happen.

Save yourself some time. Delete all your pics, videos, songs, links, emails and addresses, delete all documents, then remove your hardrives, smash em, and do the same with the bios chipset on your MB, because that's what you'll end up with running around the internet with no AV at all. May not happen this week, or next, or even next month, but it's GOINGto happen.

I am seriously thinking about going with an Apple laptop next as they are not near as likely to catch a cold.

Here is another problem that is more complex. Maybe someone has an idea:

I use Outlook (hotmail) for e-mail. About every 6 weeks or so, when I go to open it, it does not open and responds with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". There are a couple other webpages that will not open and I get the same message. I downloaded google chrome to check if it was associated with the browser. But chrome would not open the same webpages. If I ignore it for a few days and use my apple cell phone to check my e-mail, I can go back and it will be working again. This has been going on for over a year. Any ideas?

BTW, it is not working this morning.

outlook/hotmail has been the path of choice for script kiddies and virus writers for so long (at least 10 years) that some websites won't allow access to it while on their website, and as you said, some ISP have it blocked for the same reason.
Inyati--the most probably reason for you being able to get to it sometimes and not others is a dynamic IP address--meaning you don't have a permanent ip. (neither do I) Outlook won't recognize certain entire IP blocks of addresses--others it does.
BUT, there should have been more to your error message than just "IE cannot display webpage". Most often, it includes something about DNS, (Domain Name System) . I don't like to recommend fixes and won't this time
either, but you may want to do some research or ask a local 'guru' about "DNS cache flushing" or "Flush DNS.

Thanks, greybeard. :nod: I could call the cable provider. It has been a strange problem. I usually experience it using Outlook. Then, when I go to the dictionary website, it will not allow access. Neither does Tiny Pictures. Those three are always affected at the same time. It always occurs in unison. Everything else works. Including my financial sites, CT, etc. Strange to me. :(
