Is it ok for the boss to get intoxicated and have just as much fun as the employees? The boss seems to think it would be a sign of weakness and loss of respect, and also create an environment where the employees might even think he is human.

Nobody at an office Christmas party should drink to excess. Very bad career move.

Depends on what type of business, how many employees, how much the boss makes, how much the employees make.

But I get what you're saying about loss of respect in this world of soft and sensitive and "life's not fair" with the blinders on attitudes that bosses/employers deal with all the time. You have to be careful with that kind of stuff, I want my employees happy and to know that they are appreciated, balanced with knowing who writes the checks and who started this business 10 years ago from nothing before they even thought of working there. IMO

I agree with Tennessee Tuxedo; however, I've never been to an office party where anybody drank. I don't think I've ever been to anything where people drank. I was talking to someone a few weeks ago and they thought it odd that there was no drinking at the weddings I've attended. Is drinking that "normal" among most folks? It just never was part of my environment.

I notice when they run a news story about a town going wet, everybody talks about how being dry hindered them so much; they say that before people will pass on their restaurants to go a few miles down the road to eat at one that serves liquor. I'm thinking, really? I didn't know liquor was that big of a deal.

Myself and my immediate family are like you. But yes, it is normal around more folks than not.

I've seen the ceo of a fairly large company sloshed before. It just snuck up on him. I learned quite a bit that night. Even drunk he was not rowdy or disrespectful

I drink a little almost every day. Most days just a sip when I go to the barn to feed the calves. But no where I go to a family get together is there any drinking. Other places I go it is almost as if it is part of the event. I had a visit at the governors mansion this fall and there were 2 open bars. I drank water. :help:

We never drank at family events because the elders didn't approve. Now that they've passed most everyone brings their own.

I'll be at a Christmas party tomorrow night that will have a open bar. And serve 5+ cases of champagne. There will be drunks sleeping in the yard in the morning. The only problem is we are non drinkers. So as soon as the first drunk shows their rear we're gone.

It depends on the company and the individuals involved.
Example: the company party for one of the genetics companies that I deal with is going on as I speak. (please note that I am here and not there. :mrgreen: ) Their last manager was a saint and we all loved him. He was as bad as the rest of us and one day he decided to change and he never touched tobacco or drank again and I've never heard a swear word come out of his mouth but we loved him and we trusted him and we still do. He was human and we got to be as well. He could be right there with us without joining in and he was still a part of the team.
His replacement didn't drink at last years gathering... He's not one of us and that had a lot to do with it. :lol: None of us trust him but it would help a whole bunch if he'd show up to a meeting buzzed with a can in his shirt pocket.

I am never around alcohol. I never thought about it, but I have never been to a wedding were alcohol was served.

We're getting into different views of what consumption is here. I can't stand to be around a drunk and there's a good chance I've drank more than he/she has when I'm making the determination that they're drunk. I read the original post with light social drinking in mind as that's been my experience with most social gatherings. Having a few drinks, getting drunk, and alcoholism are three separate things.

CP, read the original post again. Nothing inappropriate about a drink or two but getting intoxicated is a whole 'nother thing.
