Cogan Grass

We are fighting this invasive grass, but sometimes it feels that we are fighting the battle alone. Very little has been heard in our area from our local county government. We were on our way home yesterday, there is some Cogan grass just a mile or so south of us, the county road crews were mowing it like it was any other type grass. The county has to be aware that by mowing this grass, they are just spreading this menace all over the county. I wrote a blog about cogan grass several months ago, if you need information on this grass check it out at http://www.gizmoangus.blogspot.com Many producers in the southeast have this grass in their pastures and don't even know it. The major problem is that it spreads so fast that once established it is very difficult to get rid of. The best way to prevent it in your pastures is to be educated be able to identify it. Heck as fast as this grass grows it would be great if cows would even eat it, but they won't so don't let it bite you in the butt!

I live on the MS Gulf Coast and Cogon grass is everywhere. Glosophate sp. is a good killer. Since there are other products than Roundup ($49. 1/2gal) i.e Eraser ($49. 2 1/2 gal) it make it less painful.
Also, the USDA Soil Conseveration office will give out, at tax payer expense, herbicide according to acres contaminated with cogon grass. They sometimes give Arsonal which is a powerful herbicide, be very careful and believe the instructions. If you use arsonal you won't get anything to grow for a year and I think maybe longer. Arsonal will kill popcorn trees, chinese privey and all else that glosophate won't.
I get about 95% results with roungup and spot spray the rest.
Cogon is like fire ants, it's here and you can control it on your property if you stay with it.
