coccidiosis

we have had a lot of trouble in the past few years with coccidiosis in our calves during calving season. We started feeding rumensin blocks 30 days prior to calving this year. Do the calves receive any type of protection through the cow or do they actually have to be consuming the blocks as well.

Where are you keeping the cows - in a field or lot or?

nope have to eat it themselves like dun said. we just got done dealing with it at inlaws place and vet said had to drench them 5 days in row is only way to treat the calves and make sure they are consuming enough to get rid of.

We have cocci going around, too. Luckily we caught it before it killed any calves and now it's off the farm.

Does the Bio-Mass stuff do any good against this? They claim for scours. Have no clue about cocci. Im using ADM's version of Bio Mass. Soposedly more yeast or something in it. Mix 2.5# into 50# of my mineral. Ive got scours, nothing real bad, but I have scours.

I think you mean BioMos. Good ingredient but not for cocciodis. More of a yeast extract for rumen health and is an aid in preventing salmonella.

Ya BioMos. Somedays I cant spell. I was also thinking about cryptoe. Didn't take my smart pills yesterday I guess. All I know is I had a lot of loose ones...even pretty bloody. Stuff was getting along untill we had a wet spell, which I know don't help any, but quit putting the mineral out. Things sure went donw hill. I kinda thought it might be ferry dust, but not real expensive so what the heck I guess.

No it's good stuff...good enough that "most" feeds don't contain it due to extra cost. More of a "next generation" thing.

Extra cost is right. What I was told was most feed companies don't put in enough to do what the scientific claims say it does. What gets me is ADM's version has more "stuff"...Im guessing yeast, than the Biomas and you don't need as much. I also think it makes it tastier. Kinda wonder if they don't cut back on ammount to keep consumption under controll. I guess $72 a ton is what it is costing me. Expence ya, keeps you from what Im doing now (treating sick calves) it would be worth it too me. Guess I must of got something it don't cover. Oh well.
