Went to the salebarn today. I bought a couple of what i thought were some fairly spunky holstein steer calves. I was always told that if the eyes were clear and their ears were up and they weren't dehydrated, they'll be okay. Six hours later, they don't even look like same calves. They are shriveled up and one can barely walk. They are still eating good but not drinking enough in my opinion. Is there something that they were possibly given to make them energetic temporarily. Is all hope lost?
 
Sounds like they might not have been wiened , trymix'n a little mineral in some grain auta make'm want a drink. You can try bottle feed'n them , but I don't think you should have to.
 
Yep, sounds like they are suffering from separation withdraws. Try to get a electrolyte solution into them by bottle, this will help fight oncoming stress induced antibodies and sickness plus boost the calves immune system alittle. These mixes can be bought at several feed stores or your vet and good to keep on hand. Good luck to the little guys.
 
These calves weighed in right at 265# a piece. Do you think they will still take a bottle?

265 for Holsteins is probably at the just weaned stage. Rather then restarting thwem on a bottle I would be more inclined to give them a shot of one of the qulity antibiotics avaialble only from the vet and make sure they have good grass hay and a highly palatable grain mixture free choice. Little bottle calves like that haven;t really been exposed to much in life until they hit the saleabrn where they're exposed to about everything known to man in a short time frame. The weaning and moving can lower they;re resistence to infections. That's the only time I believe that precautionary antibiotics is a good idea.
 
Steins shoulda been weined for a while now at 265.

Banamine and Nuflor are a calf buyer's best friend. Get them some quick.

A textured feed will be better than pellets to get em started.

If it was me i would be gitting some baytril in them fast. i agree with dun on this being one of the only times for precautionary antibiotics.
 
Antibiotics won't address the immediate condition of the calves. They need Banamine first accompanied with a Nuflor, Baytril, or Exceed type drug. Give them the banamine daily till the appear energetic without it.
 
Also Banamine is not approved as a intra-muscular injection for cattle. It can be given up to 3 days. There is a generic available which costs less than the name brand.

It is good advice about the preventative antibiotics, although be cautious about randomly using "feel good" drugs. Sometimes you can end up masking a problem and end up running into trouble before you know it.

ETA: at sale barns, being moved with a hot shot will liven one up too.
 
I 8-wayed them, wormed them, and gave them a little taste of probius before i unloaded them out of the trailer. Then i penned them up by themselves. I fed alfalfa pellets mixed with golden grow(25% protein) and put electrolytes in their water. I didn't think to banamine them. I was told that you nufluor was for pneumonia. Can you get it off the shelf or is available from vet? Can i overmedicate at this point?

Nuflor and any of the serious antibiotics you have to get fomr the vet. Nuflor is used for "shipping fever complex", like pneumonia, etc.
