So today I noticed Mega was really bagging up and getting serious puddingbutt, so she seems to have gone along with my plans of calving at the end of the month, a little earlier than the rest of the herd. Along with her, I brought her daughter and one of her mates Tatla, both first time heifers, and both fairly early, and VERY round. I also brought up Cenci, just to round off the hay feedings to round numbers of bales.
One of my routines for "good" cows is to clip their belly and udder before calving, it helps keep them clean in an otherwise not too clean corral, and they can get rid of lice before the calf comes along.
So this is my herd.. I had to close the door to the crowding pen (where I was clipping) to keep cows OUT.. I had to halter and tie them not to stop them from taking off when the clippers fired up, but to prevent them from leaning on me until they'd squash me against the rails.. They were fighting for who got to be in line for the next clipping (even if they had already gotten it). I did the belly and neck on all of them, except Cenci, she seemed to have some lice a bit everywhere, so she got the whole works.. They all were lifting their legs so I could get the clippers around the udder just a bit better..
After the clipping I had a sponge soaked in Absorbine Ultrashield and I'd douse them around the snout and behind the ears.. I didn't make friends with that procedure.
