Lately a couple people have been saying my bull is getting fat. I dont see it, but they keep insisting that I cut the feed back and give more hay. When I feel his stomach, I dont feel any fat, its all solid, just behind the ribs. Any other suggestions besides more hay less feed?

Yeah. Sell him this fall to some commercial outfit if you can.
 
more grass, less feed. does he get any turnout? arent show cattle supposed to be chubby?
 
Selling him isnt really an option. Ive put in way to much work to just sell him, Id rather try to fix a problem and keep him.

He gets outside for a few hours every evening, providing that its somewhat dry (if its wet, we lose all grass and it turns into a mudhole if animals are out). Too hot this time of year to leave him out all day, there is no shade outside yet (that is coming soon). Once the shade is up, I will most likely put a round bale of hay out there and let him out during the day.

Market steers usually have some fat on them, but breeding cattle are generally very lean (at least show animals).

So, tell me - just what in the name of heck and almighty do you plan to do with this animal?

In the end, it makes you nothing and you spend - spend - spend.

It is your hobby and I understand - but what about the money that jingles in your pocket?

Seems to me you are delaying the inevitable, but why?

I am going to breed him with my heifer, and there are other people with heifers that want to use him to. I plan to use him exactly for what bulls are for, breeding.

Beefy, Ive been told by several people that 18 months is about the right age for Brahmans to be bred. Unless there is more that I havent been told, Itll probably be another 7-8 months.
 
Stick a steer or two with him. Not only will he get his exercise, but he will gain a little breeding experience while shucking a few extra pounds. :D
