Check Your Tanks

Just talked to my cowmanager. She tells me she has figured out why we had such terrible results on last years AI.

All the semen we bought before March of 2012 is dead!

I am only out about $2500 she had 3 or 4 times that much in there inclusing some Angus genetics that are not replaceable!

sorry to hear that, that is one of my concerns, our AI rep fills our tanks on a schedule, and is great about it, but I still check periodicaly too, just in case.

Dang man, that's like a kick in the "nads". Hate to hear that happening to you. One question... I know you all use good semen but why such a large inventory?

Does your farm insurance cover it?

Some companies will insure tanks for replacement of the semen.
I'm inclined to say that if she's your manager then it's a good thing that she lost more than you did on the deal. That way you know it won't happen again and so you can keep her around.

We ALMOST had that happen! Our tank was filled in Feb, it is a 16 week tank, so should have held till at least May. We check it regularly, even though we have an ABS rep fill it. When we checked it mid march (just 4 weeks after fill, about), it was down to 18 CM! Called the rep, he did not have his tank so he brought out a smaller empty tank and filled it a bit. Ended up down to 4 CM just a few days later, called my Genex rep since the tank was under warranty. She brought me out a loaner tank, transferred all the semen and embryos over, and took my old one. They are currently checking it, might take up to 6 weeks, and will replace it for free if it is defective. That is what I call service!

Sometimes things just happen Vic. If it wasn't that it would be something else. Good on ya for standing by her. It could be wrose, you could have AC for a cow manager. :lol:

Bad 3way. I just built a plywood box for my tank and hauled it out to the shop. I probably got $500 worth of semen in it. One thing for sure in this life, schite just keeps coming at us. I guess when it stops; we will be pushing up orchard grass.

I had a tank go bad in less than 2 days...... Checked my tanks was all good lowest was over 1/2 except my 10 ltr so called my rep to fill it, he came out and wanted to go ahead and top of the rest,,,, my mve20 was dry as a bone lucky as i only had about $500 in it......so for those of you condeming the woman for not checking the tank, I ask you how often do you check your tanks??? My rep said they could go empty in a matter of hours!!!!

I don't think anyone was condemning anyone, it was a mistake, but they happen. We really don't know what happened other than the really important thing ........ Hundreds of $ of semen was lost. I'm sure there's a reason for it, but "shyt happens" (I hate that phrase). Vic's post did remind my to check my tank, it was way to low, but still had a good frost line and LN2 vapors coming out the top. But it was low enought I grabbed my wallet and the tank and drove straight to get the tank charged.

BTW she told me that when the tank went dry there was still vapors coming out so she thought we were OK. BTW last count on the inventory between us we lost well over $5,000 as she had Angus bulls in there that have been a long time gone! Luckily my best stuff was just a year in there and it is OK but i still lost about 65 straws when it is all counted up. I thought is was more but forgot i had given some away before this happened!

Scary thing, that is what my tank was! I wonder how often that happens. How old was your tank? Mine was about 4 years old, and they warranty them for 5 years.
