I raise Angus and AngusX cattle, and this weekend my youngest son tells me he wants to raise/show a Charolais. With the Angus, I now the what and who to look for in the Angus breed, but not on the white cattle. There are a few sales coming up soon that we have found online and we are going to start our hunt. Any Ideas?

I have 2 sales pick out that are Charolais sales. Both in East Central TX. They may have a few Appendix but for the most part they should be pure bred. I am waiting on the catalogs to come. As I do on the Angus, I will look at the EPD's as well as how the animal looks and moves. I guess big thing I am looking for is any genetic defects to watch for and a hint on top blood lines.
 
Nipp Charolais in Overbrook OK has a good cross section of popular Charolais bloodlines in Texas: http://www.nippcharolais.com/ Take a look at the bulls in their catalog; it will give you an idea of how bloodlines compare.

As far as genetic defects are concerned the biggest problem was Arthrogryposis as some of the French Imports were carriers. The breeders did a very good job of weeding these cattle out so cleft palate is much less a problem than in the Angus breed. The newest problem was a Robertsonian translocation (1/29) that in theory can impact fertility This occurs to around 0.6% of the population. The interesting thing is that no fertility impact has been seen at a practical level from this translocation. So genetic defects are a rather minor problem.
