seen some 465 weight steers that were yellow / white several had 4'' long horns just the way they were built my guess is they were char/longhorn cross and a few even looked to have a touch of Brahman in them brought 1.77 per pound. thought that was pretty good since there was not a black one on them.

Back in late October at a bred heifer sale, Charolais cross heifers were consistently the highest averaging ones in the sale that night. In years past that had not been the case, and there were more of them at that sale than in the past also.

I have actually been contimplating a Char bull to rotate across our Brahmans. The prettiest animals I have ever seen were Brahman x Char cows. They were man killers but they were beautiful.

Yellow/Tan can be Char crossed w/ anything red. Way I understand their colour is the white is a diluter. Two white genes to make a white animal, one dilutes the colour gene from the other parent. We breed Charolais to primarily black cattle and get silvers and about half tans since the cows carry the red gene too. Red Simmental cross cows give a tan every time, often w/ a white face. As far as temperament goes I've seen placid and crazy Charolais just like any other breed.

Char cross sells great up here, consistently near the top of the market. Even when they aren't the favorite the extra pounds tend to add up.

I have seen a lot of the Char/Longhorn cross, where I live rodeo/roping is a very big sport so Longhorn cattle are easy to come by, most of these yellow calves are Char/Longhorn cross plus these already had fairly good size horns. I thought they brought just pretty good and if they had been mine I would have already had them horns removed and they may have brought even more ??? It tells me the feeder people seem to think this cross still feeds out well ???

Yes around here they'd sell way better without the horns anyway. The feeder people would know they'd feed out better than straight longhorns for sure. Charolais would add some meat. Sounds like they want to run Longhorn cattle in the area but find running a Char bull fetches them more for the calves. Heard good things about Longhorns on rough land, not many around here outside of the rodeo crowd.

Ya, sorry about that. Neighbor breeds a bunch of those longhorn x char and they are all different variations of that yellow. He has some commercial cattle mixed in also. He dehorns them and gets them all pretty to sell but you can tell the coloring on the LH X vs the commercial Xs. He keeps a lot of the LH Xs for replacements. His heifer trap is at the top of his place on our border so I get to look at them all the time when I go in. :D

Char, again. When he mixes them all in to sell they blend pretty decent and just look like a pile of white calves.

The neighbor has a rainbow herd of cows. There is literally one of almost every breed in his pastures. There are about 40 bulls in his bull pasture right now. He uses Char and Angus bulls. The pasture where the older bulls are has more Char than it does Angus. The yearling bull field has 6 Angus and 4 Char. When I helped sort calves this fall all the Char cross heifers got shipped. Replacements were all either black or red. But there were more grey, tan, yellow, and orange calves than any other color. And those were the biggest calves.

Had a neighbor with small dairy and a beef herds. Rough operation. The Char bull settled some of his Holsteins, and he milked the resulting heifers for a while. Really big and really wide cows. Looked like tonners.
This bull was pretty aggressive. City boys parked in the pasture one spring to turkey hunt, and this bull trashed their new white pickup. Didn't know if it was the color or Dodge that he objected to.

Seen some good CharolaisX steers top the local sale last week. And there were some top notch black steers there as well. Both sold in groups. CharX brought .02/lb more.

30 years ago we had CharX cattle. Cross them with anything and they sell well. In the process of building fences now and buying some pairs for retirement as Social Security may not be dependable and not enough.
