Change your own oil

If you change your own oil, in equipment or trucks and cars, how do you dispose of it the legal way. Years ago it was used to treat lumber, pour on gravel roads or kill unwanted trees or just pour it out on the ground, the EPA has put a stop to that.
I know a mechanic that let me put it in his holding tank then a truck would come pick it up, they used to pay him so much a gallon, then then stopped paying , picked it up free , now they want to charge him by the gallon to pick it up. How do you all dispose of oil and anti-freeze the legal way?

:hide: I buy oil in 5 gallon buckets. I but the used oil back in the buckets.

I use it in a pump up sprayer to lightly spray my grain drills and disc before their put away.

I also use it as a starter when burning brush.

The local county precinct garbage collection point takes oil and antifreeze--free. You just pour it in their tank and someone comes along and sucks it out--dunno who and I don't care. (They don't take used cooking oil according to the sign.)
Most of mine tho, I just use to help burn brush piles.

Put it in oil barrels, then sell it to an oil company that sells it to Ocean tankers, which in turn burn it when they get in International waters.

I dump it on the bulk junk oil tank at the local JD place. They burn it during the winter to heat the shop area.

I use it for various things like dogs with mange, rusty equipment, cats , trailer floors , post, cats, mix 1part gas 2 part oil makes a good fire starter when burning tires and old carpet. I just funnel it back into 5 qt jugs I bought it in.

That's my suggestion to central texas mechanic. Get you an oil burner heater. Happy happy in the winter.

Lots of collection places here. Parts store takes it. Tractor place and the state forestry takes it as well as the oil change places.

I have enough equipment that leaks oil I have no shortage of things that run on used oil..

Just my xr100 motorcycle takes a quart a week (hint, it holds less than a quart)... it's really got the blues, but I'm hoping it'll get me around for the summer at which point it'll be replaced or rebuilt.

I burn it in my old Ford truck, backhoe and boat. FYI used diesel oil turns off road diesel fuel black, mix at a 20 to 1 ratio in the newer diesel engines.

That's a thought... How much % do you run in the old ford truck? full strength? Does mileage improve on it... Been tempted to try it on my 12V dodge

My 92 Ford has two fuel tanks so I run the front tank straight motor oil - hydraulic oil and just purge the system with the back tank. Using a 50 - 50 oil to fuel mix in the summer you'd never know the difference Nesikep. The older Cummings are the best oil burners. Don't use cooking oil it gums up real bad.

I've always been leary of using it for fuel. Could you use it in older deeres. 4020, 2640. Do y'all filter it someway to remove any fine metal partials?

Fenceman, my 6076 JD has over 19k hours on it now. The injectors and pump need to be rebuilt for the first time now. But it still runs smooth and starts easy, just smokes more than it should.
I strain the oil first with a spray strainer then is goes through a cheap paper Culligan water filter setup. Most of the used hydraulic oil I use goes straight into the fuel tank besides the bottom 10 gallons of the barrel. I like to mix hydraulic oil 50-50 with used motor oil just for the lubrication qualities in the motor oil. With fuel being so cheap it's not really worth the hassles, but I'm cheap and screw DOT.
I'm sure you burn more fuel than we do, and I consume 3k+ gallons of road fuel a year. And just think of all the guns and ammo you could buy if you cut your fuel bill in half.
