I saw an advertisement at a store today saying $6.50 for a square bale of hay and $8.00 for a sac of corn. Not one to buy squares but it just seemed to me the spread between the two was out of kilter or is this about right?

Not too sure on the price of squares, but a 50lb sack @ the co-op is $7.25 and a 100 lb sack @ the mill is $15.00.

At our local hardware - feed store corn is less than $7.00 for a 50lb bag.

I'll buy the corn. More energy. Keep a bovine in a lot better condition. Just need a little hay to keep the rumen working.

Wow! I wish we had your guys corn prices, but I'm not in corn country. I bought a 50lb bag of rolled corn today for my replacement heifers for $15. $6.50 for a square seems high, I pay, farmer direct, $4 to $5 a square. I expect at least 60 lb bales, three tine bales 90 lbs + may run $12 to $15 for high quality orchard grass. I have a hand shake contract with a friend to bale my place in 60 lb bales for $2 to $2.50 a bale laying in the field.

If anyone in my area has a cheaper line on corn please let me know! :tiphat:

I was looking for some squares last month for the wife to put out for the bottle calves and not have to tear into a roll. The coop usually has it all winter but were out and are not getting anymore because she said it was going to cost her $8 just to get it and she knew nobody would buy even if she sold it for break even prices.

I got $7 on square bales all winter. I sold some out of the field last summer for $4 though. I usually put up around 4000 bales and try to sale at least half of them in the field(you pick up and haul). The rest I put in the barn and sale all winter. I have managed to build up quite a few customers by putting up good Bermuda hay. They are mostly horse folks looking for good quality hay.

Fertilized coastal hay runs into money. You have labor to get it to market. Feed store has to make a little too.

Well if my math is right you could save a million dollars if you bought a million bales from me at $10/bale. Wouldn't do this for just anyone, but being its you, and you deserve it, I'll make you this deal but you better act fast before I change my mind.

Last square bale I bought for some Halloween thing was $4 I think.

Alfalfa is high here. Don't know the price but know I can't afford it. But with grass hay. Good stuff, you can buy for about $45/roll and there are 20 squares in a roll so that makes it $140 a roll. I may have to get a square baler.

I don't buy either one but if I want corn I can get it a lot cheaper and I can get square bales pretty easy for $2-$4 a bale.

coastal-bahia mix sq bales here were $3.5o-$4.00 last summer. I haven't bought any since Feb 2014 or this year tho and those few bales in Feb 2014 was for a photo project, not to feed.

I sell my 80 lb square bales for $8, very nice alfalfa/orchardgrass/timothy mix.. even if the people buying it complain, the ones eating it never do, I make a lot of equine friends with it. If I deliver it (150ish miles away) the price is $14/bale... But since there's too many arseholes with horses and my cowherd is up, I'm not going to be selling much anymore.. just a little to a few local customers that have always been good to me
