my situation: my property is a half mile off the road and my wife and i have to go thru 2 sets of gates before we get to our property. my wifes grandfather owns the land that we drive thru to get to our property. we are wanting to put some cattleguards in so we dont have to open the gates every day to and from work and to run errands and so forth. my wifes grandfather does not want them he wants gates and wants to keep them locked but he dont have to driver thru them like we do everyday. we have a right of way thru his property to ours and could put cattleguards up if we wanted to but we dont want to upset and cause any problems with her grandparents so we can keep peace. does anyone have any gate options thjat are good and would keep us form having to get in and out of the vehicles in the rain aand cow mess everyday on our way to work. i have looked at the mule systems that go on gates , does anyone know anything about them or tried them. i know they have the drive thu gates but i heard they are rough on your vehicles.. and advice would be helpful

google 2T Cattle, it is a cattle guard that raises in the center when not in use..as you drive onto the guard the center flattens out for the vehicle to cross..it still is not a locked gate. but a pretty smart idea..

They lock too. You open with a keypad or a remote that looks like a garage door opener.

There's a gate some folks use up in the hill country of Texas that you drive thru. Don't know what it's called - somethink like bump n go or something like that.

The idea is the gate is center hung around a pretty big pole. There is a chain or cable attached to the ends of the gate and attached to the top of the center pole. You come up to the gate and bump it with your bumper and when the gate swings open you drive through, the gate closes automatically behind you. Takes a few rear bumpers and left side quarter panels on your vehicle to get used to it but after that it works pretty good.

You are right Earl. We just call them bumper gates. Surely that is not the proper term. They are great and I know where a few are still in use. Never bumped anything but the rubber bumper. You still have to get out and lock/unlock them if you want them locked and that is part of Tom & April's problem.

First I ever saw were on Galilee Road just south of Hallsville, Texas (east Texas) back in the 60's. Somehow a kid was playing when a truck went through and was killed by one. I never understood exactly how it happened.

yea thats our main probem, her grandparents thisnk if ther are cattle guards everyone will ust drive in there and steal there stuff(which would not happen) but we want to try to please them since we are real close to them and want them to be able to enjoy their remaining years

We have one. Works great 99.9% of the time. All you have to do is to maintain the battery. It is set with a code so you can't just push the button to get in and out. Has a garage door opener thing. I also have it programmed into my truck. I have had a couple of imbiciles try to push it open which results in a bent gate that you sometimes have to repair by welding. I don't know how it compares in price to having a cattle guard installed.

Lammie we have Texas gates everywhere plus the locking gates and that is the next project to get the locking gates onto a solar panel because they are a pain in the but ,,,however with people thinking they can come and go on private property as they want, it is a must.
Tommie&april if you can afford the expense that is definitely the way to go. It6 should make you happy and your grandparents as well.

Have never had good luck with them. Cattle eat the wires and they always have problems, out and electronics don't mix. We put one in a couple years ago and it has worked for about 2 weeks total.

Maybe we got a cheap one at $1,000... hate to see what you have to pay for a goot-one. Can get a cattle guard for that..

I can see cattle rubbing against the panel and breaking it off. Our's is in front of the property before you get to the pastures. Pipe gates there. I don't know how much Steve paid for our's. It was installed before we met. I sure do like it, though. I'd have to look at it so see the how it is wired. It's dark and I ain't walking out there. Boogie men. :nod:

I probably should have said "west" instead of east. My memory is usually terrible but I even remembered the name of the road from 40 plus years ago. I even remember the owners names. I went through those gates many times. Does the same family own that property?

Grandaddy (paternal) died in '83 and I don't stay in touch with folks there much any more. I just get over there to look at land I inherited from time to time. It is all pine trees now (mostly). It is over off of FM 968.

A you go east, they have built a new school across from the old school, a new subdivision has been developed on the east edge of the city limits, there is a large ranch called Germantown,and then the property that you are talking about. I'm not familiar with the family, but lots of that property in the area is changing hands.

You're right. I remember when Robert Newhouse went to that old school. I saw him rush for 740 yards one night as quarterback. He hauled hay with us back then. His dad was janitor of that old school. Awesome family.

I think automatic gate closers is one of the best option for you, its perfectly suitable for you in all comparisons so you should be try this....I am recommending you because I recently used it and Now its perfectly safe and fine.
