GALVESTON — A national record for live cattle in one port shipment was set in Galveston last week, with 5,585 heifers embarking on a three-week voyage to Russia.
The cattle arrived in Galveston in 143 tractor-trailers from Kansas and were loaded over the course of 10 days. Inspections and a roundup by drovers on horseback followed unloading in a warehouse near Pier 34.
The herd of mostly pregnant Holstein heifers was then guided through a chute of massive shipping crates built by longshoremen.
