Cattle Squeeze Alteration???

I was watching the Cattle Show on RFD TV and noticed a cattle squeeze that had an extension that extended a few inches out from the neck catch and kept the cow from being able to turn its head. Our old squeeze doesn't have this, but seems like it would sure make ear tagging a lot easier. Does anyone have a squeeze with this feature? I'd sure like to weld something up for my squeeze.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There is a hooked bar off of a chain on my head gate that allows the head to be isolated. I've never used it. I ear tag and vaccinate all cattle without it.

Most of my cattle can be tagged and vaccinated outside of the headgate or else in the medina gates.

Mine have what is called neck extenders. They can be folded out and pined in either use em, or don't use em position. They are real handy for tagging and mouthing.

I've seen those neck extenders, and I have every intention of retrofitting my headgate with them. I hate tatooing when a cow is hammering back and forth in the head gate. I also think if she immobile, there would be less chance of her dropping down when I'm brisket tagging.

I have one on aportable chute made by --------.Personnally,I don't care for it as calves' ears get behind the bars and nothing keeps cows from tossing their heads.My fixed chute has a different brand which has a cross-bar and chain assembly.I like using a halter rope and tying it up short to do tatooing.

We've got the neck bars, headsweep, and head table on ours. Neck bars are ok, not really thrilled about them. Headsweep is nice for tagging and to calm a rowdy one. Table is the cat's meow for eye work.

Yeah, we've got the headsweep as well, but the neck extender concept sounds a bit more useful seeing how I don't usually have a lot of people around to help me.

Exactly how far in from of the main catch do the neck extenders extend? 8" or so? I plan on welding up something out of 2" pipe, but the trick will be to make it retractable so it won't get in the way when I don't want to use it.

Anyone got pictures?

I'm not walking down to the barn in my skippies to measure them right now, but off the top of my head I would say they extend out about 4" or so and are made out of appr. 1/2" cold roll. What are you hoping to accomplish by adding them?

I must be old fashioned. I thought that neck extender was a pain in the pattootie when I tried one.

My cattle arn't the type to run and ram through the chute either. But I busted more needles vaccinating that year than I have in the 3 years since. I keep a halter handy and tie them to one side or the other if I need them to be still. Whether dehorning, treating pinkeye, giving shots...what ever, The table or the neck extender was just in my way and a hindrance.

If you don't have them...put 'em on. It keeps the head out so you can get to the neck for injections. The head won't move around as much also.

I'll try to get a couple of pics for you. The hinge section is fairly simple and would be easy to make. I use a piece of hose split lenghtwise to cover them. The hose makes the opening smaller and grips better so I can catch 200 pound calves if I want to.

The only folks I've ever seen use the neck extender was the salebarns. Theirs are hydraulic operated. Just pull the lever and the cows neck gets bent upward and immobilized. They use it for checking teeth.

This is the neck extenders I have on my chute. I added the hose to help catch the smaller ones. The chute is designed for 300 pounds and up. But works well with the 200 pounders. It don't show up in the pics but you can also but a chain in the hooks and it prevents them from raising their head.

I have some of those also. This is a corral I'm working on that is closer to the house. I've still got to pour a slab and build a shed just in front of what you see in the pic's. The squeeze will move to the slab, and I'll be able to work out of a roll around toolbox for tagging and etc.. I don't know if I'll be able to handle working in the shade with a fan on me and out of the mud. I guess I'm getting soft. The other corral is muddy, in direct sun, with to wide of alleys. A lot of cattle and memories have come through it. That set has two bolts that I wrap the rope from the nose tongs around. I like the nose tongs for dehorning.

This is ours with the neck bars on, the headsweep can't get as much leverage on the cow's neck with them and lets the cows swing their head more. They're nice for IM shots but kind of a hinderance for SQ's.

Note: Mildly agitated smokie not included.
