cattle prices this week Jan 7-11???

Just curious what everyone saw at the local sales this week as far as price and quality???
I read the market reports but they always seemed a little fudged to me.

Med-lg 1 at 550 was 169cwt in OKC

Havent been since Monday and the quality of the calves was bad but prices on the good ones was as much as .20 higher. Even the rougher ones were lots higher. 450lb bull and steer calves were 1.80 which is good in the east. Slaughter cows were about 30% of the sale.

USDA grain report came out today. Corn up lots. Killed the good gains on the calf prices.

That was the rumor around the sale barn. I think there was also a dip in futures to go along with that good news!

Fat cattle dropped .03 to .04 per lb this week at the barns compared to last week. 1.24 on fat steers this week. Feeders down some, hard to get a good feel based on what I saw for prices and weights as I was not there.

Yesterday up 5 to 10 from last week. 500 TO 600lb steer's 1.62 to 1.80, but the discount for unweaned calves and lower quality calves was more this week. Some nice 425lb steers brought 2.02 and some that were about 400 brought 2.10. And i sold 35 holsteins that weighed 550 and got 1.10

Sold a few this week Str. av 672= 1.6725 Hf av 642 =1.42 Decent cows 3rd 1425 had no good cows. Killer bull .82

I am always amazed at the price difference from one geographic region to the other. I sold several 870 pounders for 1.34. I normally would never let them get that big, but needed to wait till after first of the year.

I am amazed at the differences too! What I saw at my local sale was the pairs and bred cows attractiveness wasnt great. They got started an hour late so i didnt get see weigh cows and calves.

Be interesting to see what feeders do Monday as one of the salebarns by me has a feeder cattle sale on Monday, Jan 14. It's around 6,000 head they have to run through at least as far as listed cattle they know of. Special sale in Fallon Nv this past Saturday the 12th all classes of calves about 6-8 higher. Couldn't be there, gave a guy an order. I ended up with 2 loads, fancy black English steers weaned average 575 average $165/cwt.

Must not be in a hot spot.
Bought single 4 wt bulls the first week of January for $150.00. Reds and blacks.
Bought group of 2 weight bulls for $182.50. Thin blacks.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the market usually goes up after the first week or two of January?

I sold 9 calves today and found the result interesting. This is the first time I've never stayed to watch the sale of my stock. I had other business a couple hours south, so I unloaded, got my ticket and left. Picked my check up 6 hours later. Four heifers averaged 551 lbs @ $153. Five steers averaged 534 lbs. @ $156. I've never seen them this close in price. Had different buyers on the steers. One buyer bought all the heifers.
