cattle-guard crossers

I have 4 pairs that apparently crossed our cattle guard and went up the road to our neighbor's wheat field. We dug the cattle guard out by hand as best we could last night in the dark. I was wondering 1. Once they start to do this are they likely to do it again? 2. Are there any other suggestions for preventing this.

Hang a chain across the guard and if that doesn't stop it, hook a solar fencer or electric fencer to the chain and once they get into that the problem should stop. I have heard folks paint the guard rails a bright color on every other rail. Some hfs. I had once walked the end of the cattle gurad rather than jump it.
