This is a pic of us catching shrimp yesterday. We would catch 3-5 lbs every cast! It was amazing. My camera battery went dead before I could get pics of the catch, but here is a pic on some of the warm-iup casts. All shrimp caught were jumbo!

Wow- you guys were catching shrimp like that off of a dock.
It is a wonder that shrimp boats even bother going out in the Gulf anymore when they could just go and hang out by your dock.
I'm gonna go ahead and call bull on that one.

Is it even shrimping season right now????

Our camp is in Golden Meadow- in the marsh - unfortunately not one of the nice camps off of the main highway.

Sugarman - Being that you are from Golden Meadow, you above all should know how the shrimp are moving in Fourchon at this time of year.

I have some friends from Louisiana that brought me 40 lbs of shrimp last year that they bought off a boat. They rushed them north on ice and helped me clean them. Wow I can't even buy the stuff from the store anymore.(I was spoiled) Awesome stuff that fresh shrimp. ;-) !

They had to rush em to you so they could be fresh, but so many people buy that Chinese crap that has been frozen (at least you hope) for no tellin how long, and they label it fresh. Most places finally stopped carrying Chinese crawfish around here. Kinduv a slap in the face when soooo many people round here farm crawfish and spend their money at those stores. Speaking of which, I can't wait till we start catching good so i can start eating some. Right now the price is too high for me to boil any when they can be sold. Just have to wait I guess!

Sure would be interesting to hear more about Shrimp and crawfish. What do You call it? Fishing, netting?

And pics.

Used to pull a 15' net behind the boat ever year in Trinty bay I thought everyone had 200 or 300 pound in the freezer for years. I finally quit state priced it so to get a plate the last time I bought one years ago it was over two hundred bucks. For those not familar you had to have a license plate to shrimp in Texas waters on the boat.

Now to find out how old you are I started out in a 15' yellow Jacket molded plywood boat with a 35 HP Johnson Sea Horse that was a big motor in the day.

mnmtranching - With crawfish, it is called "running". My uncle-in-law is a farmer and they "run" about 2,500 crawfish traps everyday!

Most "real" shrimpers call it trawling.
I guess if you can set on your dock all day with a cast net and catch 3-5 pounds of jumbo shrimp per cast you would call it netting.

Any of you guys ever go snagging?

1. It sounds as though you are still doubting my shrimp catching abilities
2. Yes, I do go snagging occassionally. We go snagging off of some lock and dams in central Louisiana. It is typical to snag garfish around 40 lbs. Biggest one we ever caught was 87 lbs

gerardplauche,

What are crawfish going for right now?

You ever got shafted with some "IQF" shrimp?

Sugarman - Funny you ask that. I bought some IQF shrimp a few weeks ago and the guy assured that they were just as good as fresh shrimp. I bought into it bigtime. Long story short; ahrd to peel and very rubbery. My son's stomach did not agree with the IQF. He ended up vomiting on my dog later that evening. It ruined the family gathering.

I got shafted with the "IQF" shrimp as well.
I cannot believe they sell that stuff as "Fresh Gulf Shrimp"!!
They told us to rinse with water and thaw out a little- then we could boil them.
They were not too good going in and were a lot worse going out!

No, I think the current would just take it down the channel from where I would be throwing.

I haven't thrown a cast net in years, but my inlaws are from Pointe-aux-chene and have always caught shrimp off the highway with a cast net. I don't know if she still could, but my wife used to throw a pretty mean castnet. They have been doing pretty good with the crabs down there. They boiled up a batch tonight. Odd thing is that I was born & raised on the bayou and am allergic to shell fish.

With Mardi Gras now, and Lent coming up, you can bet crawfish will be expensive. I think they have been over $70 a sack.

He's not bulling you on the cast netting. I have a camp on the Mermentau river in Grand Chaneir, La and when the tides running right you can catch shrimp off the dock as well. Some people have large nets on a rigging that they raise and lower from their dock with a wench and catch pretty well on out going tides. You see the marshes are like a hatchery for shrimp and when they get big enough they follow the tides out into the gulf. We catch them with these nets while they are in transit. As for as jumbo shrimp, if you lucky, most of the time I average about a 30 to 35 count shrimp. Majority of the large gulf are caught by shrimp boats. ....As of friday, live crawfish were selling for $3.00 per pound, and will probably stay high until lent is over.
