Case 990

I'm looking at a case 990, I believe a 76 model. It has roughly 2000 hrs on it, one owner. It appears to be in good condition--I tested it out and it all seems to work just fine. Any opinions on this tractor and what it should be valued at? 57 hp diesel, original tires still on it too. They have some cracking but nothing that really scares me. Any input?

Not terribly familiar with that tractor but would think somewhere between 4-6k ought to buy it closer to the 4 I would think. I am assuming no loader and 2wd. Most of those old Case and David Brown tractors are pretty tough. Also check Tractor House they are usually a little high but a good place to get a base line worth.

$5000 would be top end, I'd think. It is low hours, for its age. Maybe a shade more.

I paid 9k for my Case 485 with a FEL with 1200 hrs, I just put new rears on it to the tune of 1086.00 for Chinese tires. I never had the one you are speaking of, just posting for a reference. My rears were original and it took me less than a rear of hard use to tear them up in the south Texas brush. That tractor down here in good condition would prolly go for 6-7k easily. What are you looking at?

I can get the tractor delivered for $4200--the tires are really my biggest concern. All I need it for is putting out hay to the tune of 60- 70 bales per year, bush hogging my 24 acre pasture and that's about it. My hay will have to be hauled about 100 yds from where it sits to where I feed it, I won't over work the thing that's for sure. The guy that has it showed me the original Manuel- he has the breakdown where he and his dad bought it new. $4212--they split it down the middle. Thought that was pretty cool.

Parts will be hard to find. Not that many tractors produced world wide. Ford and Massey and John Deere would be a much better choice as there were more of these tractors produced around the world. Parts for case, international are getting hard to find after fiat took them over.

You may not have but I have. 4230 case-ih that set in the shop for three months waiting for a gear for the PTO. We never received it not available. Finally had to resort to used parts and it has had a constant whine since . This tractor was only eight years old at the time. Go to the case-ih website and look up parts and see how many parts that are no longer available.

I have a David Brown 885. It also has the original back tires. They are cracked and split but will hold air most of the time, according to where on the tires it is parked. Messicks will have or can get most parts. Some are after market. It should handle your hay OK on a rear bale lift if the hydraulics are strong.

Wound up going with this tractor. Everything appears to working just like its supposed to.

I think at that time the Case 990 was the same as the David Brown 990. If so it should be a tough tractor. Dont be concerned about the tires for your use. I have a 1957 JD that had weather cracked Gum dipped tires from the same era. I still use them in pulling contests.
