Anyone here have it, I've got to have surgery on my right hand this next month, does it fix the problem?

My Grandpa had it, he also had to have surgery done on it...I think twice, but I can't remember. He said the surgery seemed to have fixed it.

Curtis, my wife had it in both wrist at the same time. It was very painful, especially at night. Hers was caused by, of all things, milking cows in a milking parlor. She had both fixed at the same time; boy was that a mistake! But the operation was a complete success.

I just had the surgery on my left hand a few months ago. I have decided to fore-go the right hand for now since the surgeon screwed my left one up so bad. He fixed the numbness and falling asleep part, but screwed up the nerves. When it gets cold, I can't move my hand. He is about as concerned with helping me as he is about whether his newspaper is east or west. I went thru physical therapy after for the one he did and the other one and the PT helped the right hand too. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE NERVE TESTS BEFORE.

You may want to go see another surgeon and see if they can fix what the previous guy messed up. Don't wait too long! I just assumed that the surgery would never be performed until an EEG would be done... too bad you had a bad experience. The surgery is normally a fairly easy one with good results.

Thanks for the replies, i have had the nerve tests done. I'm going to have my right hand did first an if all goes well i have the left hand fixed.

Make sure you practice important task that you only do with the dominate hand with the other hand before you go under the knife.

I was told AFTER the surgery that physical therapy can fix 90% of carpal tunnel cases.

CKC 1586: I would love to fix it, but as a small business owner, my insurance deductible is $5,000 and I just can't afford it right now. Last year we scraped up the money and had my hand done, tubes put in my son's ears, etc. all while the ded. was paid. Maybe later, but just can't now.

Sorry to hear that. We just don't realize how important our hands and digits are until they are out of commission! Good luck to you.

Wife had her right hand done. It took care of the pain and numbness but she has no grip strength with that hand - can't hold or twist open hardly anything. She did her therapy exercises with both hands and saw enough improvement in the left that she decided the surgery wasn't worth it. That's been almost 15 years and the right hand hasn't gotten any better and the left one hasn't gotten any worse.

Not Carpal Tunnel, but I had a ganglean cyst, (and I know I misspelled that), removed from my right wrist in 2005. I had this big knot on there that was painful and I kept hitting in on stuff. It took a couple of months to get it back to working order, but it is fine now and the cycst has not returned. Prior to that I had it drained several times, only to have it return. I didn't think that the removal would be a big deal, and I was wrong. It was full blown surgery. Had my arm in a cast. It was very painful, post op. Exercises helped.

Lammie, I have one on my right wrist (not suregeried(?) one yet) and the orthapedic I was seeing used to stick a needle thru the front of my wrist and pop it. Man it hurt so bad I told him no more. Thats when I went to "the hand specialist" who so eloquently screw up my hand. It sucks not having a good grip on things and dropping things. I can't use any of the equipment I have that has alot of movement (tillers, trenchers, sodcutters, etc.) because my hands lock up a few hours later. I know this sounds gross, but can you give more details on the wrist cyst?

I had both wrists done last year. No physical therpy was recommended for me before or after surgery. Fixed my problem and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

I did PT and got mine to back off.
It will flair every two or three years and I'm back to PT again.

You don't have to pay for expensive PT- find a therapist that will teach you the excercises and send you home to do them with household tools.Or look them up on the internet :) But it is better to get coached how to do them right.

Also did PT with my knee, back(high and low), hip, shoulder and elbow(yes I am falling apart). I broke my back years ago and it sets me up for the rest of my body to get out of wack when stressed.

I am a firm believer in PT .

Yes, I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel in my right wrist. I can't tell you if the surgery works or not, because I opted to not have it - too many horror stories from people who did have it. So far, I'm able to control it with a wrist brace.

I sent you a pm, but I also wanted to say that rather than have my "popped", mine was drained. The Ortho would freeze it, stick in a needle and draw the fluid out. It kinda hurt, but nothing big. I had it done on my wedding day, in fact, with no ill effects. But it kept returning so I had it removed and it has not returned.

The old treatment for this was to lay your wrist on a flat surface and someone would slam something heavy on it, like a dictionary. It would pop it. That sounds awful. I popped mine a couple of times by accident and it was really really painful and would bruise like mad. It was a lot better by having it drained. Sometimes they will return even when removed but mine has not.

That cycst is growing on the ganglean (sp) nerves and that is why you have limited mobility. Get it removed. You can have a Bier Block, where they just make you where you don't care and then numb your arm and remove it. Still hurts but that is what I did. I didn't want to be intubated. I fell asleep and woke up in the middle. Interesting. Had them show me the cyst after they removed it. Little white blob.

Article on MSN just this morning about carpal tunnelmight want to read it.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23467703/wid/11915773/

lammie, I have concluded that you have convinced me to drink a case of beer and just chop the whole hand off. Whew you scaring me girl. Even though I have had the needle inserted from the front of my wrist and it hurt like he77. The nurse noticed me getting nervous and made the mistake of making the comment, "oh come on you're a big guy just sit down and its nothing." i proceeded to offer her the chance to sit down and let me perform it on her! Nicely of course.
