As I read the thread about sons reading a tape measure it reminded me of the preacher who one Sunday came into service with a butcher knife, a chicken and a tape measure and talked to the members about the need of instruction to others.

It was amazing out of about 150 only about 10 or so women or men said they could cut up a chicken and less guys could read a tape measure. I could go on and on...

BTW...how many pieces do you get out of a "cut up" chicken?

I worked with a guy who got fighting mad if you said 4 and 7/16 inches. He did not use 16ths. 7/16 was "3/8's plus" to him. 9/16's was "1/2 plus" etc.

I never got used to it.

Chicken is nothing. Putting them up or cutting them up. Hogs, beef etc is where the knowledge really kicks in.

I am totally amazed at the number of people who take their white tail deer to processors. Most processors do not take the time to do the things I do. Meat is not nearly as good as it could be. But I am guessing over 75% of hunters haul their deer to processors.

Not a slam on my wife, but my girls are grossly undereducated on homemaking skills.

Two of my three daughters could start with a life chicken and have it cut up when done. Heck I watched one of them gut an elk. They have all helped cut and wrap deer and elk. And I have seen both boys vacuum the carpet, wash dishes, and cook dinner.

Define "cut up"
Have enough left over for the children after the preacher left!

Dad was one of thirteen in his family. He told about the preacher coming and was washing up at the well and he laid his false teeth on the well curb and they fell in. One of the kids run in and got a fried drumstick and tied a string on it and let it down in the well and the teeth latched on and the kid was able to get the teeth out of the well.

not only do they take them, they pay (around here) $60 to get the loins, tenderloins, a couple roasts and then the rest is ground into burger.

The way my great grandmother did it
2 legs
2thighs
2wings
1 breast
1 back
2 feet and neck(counted as one piece)
The whole breast was the man's piece.
The feet and neck were your piece if you had misbehaved

With today's huge chickens the breast counts for 2.

As a kid we drove through the midwest, Kansas I think, on vacation. Stopped at a roadside attraction that featured a six legged cow. They had some other freaks too. That old cow stuck in my head for a while. Anyways, for a long time I counted chicken legs on the table, o wasn't gonna eat a 3 legged chicken.

Place had a sign that advertised the world's largest gopher, it was a fiberglass statue. Big disapointment.

Dang, you beat me to it, M-5. The pulley bone used to be my favorite. You can go to one of the fried chicken places and they get six pieces to the chicken, 2 legs and four quarters of mystery chicken.

You got that right. Mom always split the breast in half to make two pieces and did not cut the wings up but folded all three sections up into one piece. She cooked the back and neck as well (2 pieces)

I find it interesting how many jumped up to say their son could read a tape measure.
Only one has said their daughter could butcher a chicken

I assumed knowing how to cut a pully bone I would have taught my daughter. But I guess I need to be a little more straightforward . my daughter and 2 sons can cut up a chicken. All three can also break down a deer, hog, cow.

My daughter is a little young to butcher on her own but she can help mom for a few years. ;-)
My wife does about thirty broilers and fifteen turkeys a year and the kids are right there involved. I shot a deer at the end of a long day two years ago and hung him in the barn and went out the next morning and he was already done and my wife and kids slept in.

Mine are grown but I doubt they can or would butcher a chicken. Too easy just to go down to the chicken place adn buy it.

Most butchers don't know proper way to cut up a chicken now days. Years ago it was on the test and had to be done in less than 2 min if I recall correctly

I remember my mom cutting them up....also the wringing of the neck, scalding, picking feathers....lot of work for a yard bird dinner.
