Now she looks like my kinda cow! Do you have any more that look like her with a black bull calf? I think even with no tag, you will able to tell who's calf he is. Being a real protective momma isn't necessarily a bad thing. Which of your bulls is his sire?
 
She’s tried to get in the side by side with me a few years back . If she didn’t raise such good calves she would have been gone a few years back . We have 3 daughters out of her and keep hoping for 1 more . Hard to sell a momma like her ,even with her protective attitude .

I 100% agree with keeping her. So what if you have to work the calf when its a couple months old if its one of the best ones come sale time. And no worries about someone stealing the baby calf or the dogs and coyotes bothering it.
 
She looks nice and sweet.
Granted i dont tag mine at birth but i have a few mommas like her. Wait a few weeks before you get too close. And it seems their calves are the most curious to check you out! Im like, you trying to get me killed?!
 
And here I am thinking hard pass on the cow AND any retained heifers out of her. But every operation is different. Safety first for me, ladies & gentlemen. No, it's not crucial to tag/work every newborn calf. But what if there's a problem with the calf? Or the cow during labor?

I have 2 calves I haven't been able to tag this year. Not because of the mamas, these little heifers are maniacs! Glad they have spunk, but I try to avoid getting rodeo, just to tag a calf. They can wait until we work the herd in May.
 
Standing guard . Strange but her daughters aren’t like her , attitude wise . Good mommas and raise great calves . Even have a grand daughter due with my heifers .

This is what I use to catch those fast little guys. It helps with an aggressive Mom too... at least to some degree. Let's you keep the calf between you and her as you guage her aggressiveness, which is only slightly better than sitting on top of a bawling calf. For those runners, I've been able to drive the 4 wheeler with my right hand, run up alongside of them when they're running and hook their back foot. It's a trick to do, but I'm better with this than I am with a rope! :ROFLMAO:

Unlike your barn cat, most people only have one life. Reasons to keep a spicy cow - she raises a good calf, she is pretty, she is hard to catch, just need one more calf out of her, she ain't got me yet, I ain't scared, won't happen to me, she ain't as bad as that one 10 years ago and anything else.

Reason to get rid of a spicy cow - she might permanently injure or kill you, or your spouse, or child or grandchild. If she kills you, maybe your family recovers. If she kills those others, you might not recover at all.

Not a cow, but Dr. Bruce Van Zee was the vet associated with the Iowa Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity - a group of small feeders that fed out cattle on their farms and the program supplied carcass data on the cattle back to the owners from across the country. He went into a pen with a bull to apply a pour on wormer. No need to put the bull in the chute for that. He did not survive his injuries. Go back and read the reasons for not shipping a cow and ask if those justify the risk. Dr. Van Zee did not think it would happen to him. I am sure he had done it many times, like we all have.

When I was a kid one of my uncles had a Honda Odyssey. When we took it in the pasture the cows chased it and tried to hook it. Guess they had never seen some thing like that and thought it was a predator.

Hard to imagine that now with as much as we use atvs and sxs.
