You always hear old stories about ranchers who sold out because the price of cows was high, but this seems to be mostly tied to the old cattle cycle, or to seed stock operations.

How high do bred cow prices need to get before you think someone else should own yours?

Do you know anyone who had a commerical dispersal recently, and then successfully got back in?

As far as commercials go, if someone was to offer $1400/bred cow, I would give them the pick of everything from 2 year olds to 10 year olds and keep everything else (old cows/open heifers/heifer calves). Too sell everything would be reckless if you wanted to stay in the business. In this area, even if the cow is only good for one calf, she is worth (at today's prices) an easy break-even of $1200 as bred. I always say good purebreds are worth at least $200 more, so $1600 for purebred cows.

At $1200 on commercials, I would do the 2-10 years deal, but not on the premium cow-lines. They would be kept back. :cowboy:

I know of a few commercial dispersal sales this year in my area, but they were all older producers and had no intention of going back into cows, so they sold cheap ($750-850/bred cow) and bought back in pricey backgrounders ($650-700 5-weights). :cowboy:

Cow prices have really jumped in this area.
Top cows and heifers sold for $1,350 this week. Two guys from SD were buying a lot of them...
I sold 5 culls and netted U$S 972 each. Should have loaded up a few more. :cboy:
My premium cows are not the correct color so I am not real tempted to sell them.

mind you i wont allow my cows sold till im in the ground.an then again i may tie them to the place,so the nephews an neices keep running an breeding reg beefmasters.but id sell pick of reg cows for $1800.

I have a neighbor with a top reg Holstein herd. He has a high dollar cow/heifer sale about every three years. He has box stalls in one part of the barn, and gets lots of calves out of old cows others would have shipped.
