Calving out cows for someone else.

Nicky
Need more info.,will you be in physical posesion of the cows and providing all the inputs??? Will you just provide expertise and labor. Why does the owner not want control of the calving as this is the time that you stand to loose the most on your investment of time and money.

Hi, does anyone have any information on how to charge for calving out a herd of registered cattle for someone else?

I thought this was done only in the horse world! :o I've never known anyone who calved out other people's cows, unless you count the folks working at that particular farm or ranch.

Sigh - Nicky has 2 threads on the same subject.

So I will double post as well.

How big a herd - 10 or 1000?
You feeding them?
Your feed?
Have enough feed?
Gotta' buy feed?
You doctoring them?
You calling the vet?
You paying the vet?
On your ground and in your pens?
Who provides upkeep of pens and feed?
You buying the meds?
You doing all the work from home / on site?
You alone or with help?
Your experience level?
Helps experience level?
Heifers?
Cows?
Breed?
Bred to?
Owner easy going?
Owner a friggin' nitpicker?
Who covers dead cows?
Who covers dead calves?

And so on. Took me almost 30 seconds to think of these questions. Best sit down and have a real think before you leap.

If you want answers please provide info. I have not asked all the questions either - more input required

Question asked - poster reads from virtual space - or disappears completely ...... how often does this happen?

Certs - do not completely agree with you - have done it and fared well.

It is a matter of - in this order - luck / good management / good cattle / good cattle owner / and so on.

We stay away from it now - in the end it truly does not pay. We did it on shares of animals - that's how wife and I got our start.

So although I disagree with you somewhat - I also agree - I know - I know - I know.

Yeah - stay away!
