I have a holstein steer, when he was 10 days old, that lost the hide off both knees. The vet put him on 7 days of amoxicillian then 7 day of naxcel. Treatment was done. The next day one knee began to drain a watery puss, he was down again. Back on amox stayed on for about 20 days. Knee would spray puss when straightened (we did this twice a day); then flushed with peroxide and used a drawing salve. When no more puss; changed to Nuflor every other day. 50 days old and knee is giving him trouble getting up. It's stiff and sore but, no puss. Had to put him back on a bottle. Gave amox today because he's bad again. When on amox he does better, can't leave on amox forever. What do you suggest we do? vet has no idea. Hillside's wife

Sorry for your luck, hillside. Sounds like a tough one.

Only time I've seen this happen was in a calf that was a bit older (if memory serves, he was about a month old).

He had joint infection (progressed from an infected navel that we didn't treat aggresively enough).
The infection seemed to migrate to his knees, and burst through the hide.
Didn't respond well to treatments, and in the end we ended up shooting him.

Did your calf have a fall when he skinned his knees, or did he have an infection come to head there?

Take care and hope your calf comes around.
