We have a newborn hereford bull calf that is having troulable bearing weight on one front leg. He tries to stand on it but his ankle joint folds under and then he stands on the joint. He seems to be eating well. Any ideas?

Just give him time - it often happens - if you search with the search button at the top of the page on this topic you will find all sorts of information.

More than likely born with a tight tendon on that leg. He'll get over it pretty quick if that's the problem. Just keep your eye on him. Had one born this past spring with both front ankles that way. Took him a couple of weeks to walk correctly. That's longer than usual.

does it help or hurt the calf to splint the ankle.

Neither, just is a pain in the butt for you. Search for bumblefoot, more information then you would want.

In a day or two he should be fine. As long as he can stand to nurse and keep up with the cow, I wouldn't worry about splinting it.
