My sample sizes are miniscule compared to many on this board, but as Ebenezer said some do a far better job. The Hoover Dam calves have ALL been consistent (males/females). Even my 9yo son can pick out the HD calves, no matter what their mother was. They just have a look from head to pastern.
As far as both 2nd generation or F1 cross, having had a number of HD offspring via those routes I'd say there is still consistency. For example, our JerseyxHD cross steers look like HD steers (with a bit less rump). Our HD cows throw very consistent cattle with an HD look even with HD as merely the grandsire.
My Hickok calves this year are also consistent. Long hair and ugly. But at least consistent, haha. I used a Wagyu bull a couple years ago and I will say his offspring (all steers) look earily like the ORIgen photo (he was a big wagyu sire, so they look more angus less corriente, haha)
