calf story

Saturday the 16th I found a new calf and mama was cleaning it a few hours later she brought it to the field by the house. I see her with the calf Saturday and Sunday and all looked OK. Monday the 18th about 6pm I notice all the cows gone back to the woods except this cow and she was near where she was standing that morning. I went out to her and found the calf laying broad side breathing shallow and neck arched back. Mama was licking and trying to get her up. I loaded her and brought her to the house mixed some electrolight mixture and grabbed my tube bag. Pushed a qt in her and set her up cow fashion. 2 hrs later she's still up I tube another qt of weak milk mix . Ive been tubing her every day for a week , she refuses to suck a bottle. Ive battled scours and everything with this calf. Yesterday after her evening tubing. She ran to her mama and started sucking. I turned them out in a small area today and have watched her suck the 2 rear teats twice today. Tonight I went over 2 her and got her up and she ran over to mama and punched her bag and started nursing front qtrs. Dam has a big bag and nice teats so I hope this adventure is over.

Sounds like you pulled her back from the brink. Wonder what caused her to go down in the first place?

I think she is was a dumb calf. Her tongue wouldn't work right first 5 days.

This is the 3rd calf since I had this cow , she raises good ones I kept her first 2 heifers and one of them calved a few weeks ago.

Good job. If they don't do right around here they don't make it. We've tried and we'll try again, bound to get lucky one of these days. I'm not very good with goats either.

I'm glad for you. I've had a couple that's had trouble, not that far gone though, and when they come around it is a wave of relief as well as a huge sense of accomplishment. Good on ya.

Always good when you can bring one back like that. We had one during the winter almost freeze to death and we were able to bring it back and now it is one of the best calves in our pasture.

I've made a thread about this before but StressMate is a good medicine to keep around for younger calves like that when they going into stress. We gave it to this froze calf after we dried him off and gave him Colostrum and he was standing in 15 mins. Was the reason the StressMate I don't know....but he wasn't hardly trying to stand before we gave it to him. Thought I would recommend it to everyone.

I Threw everything I had at this calf so I don't know what helped or didn't, BOSE, B12, kick start, milk replacer, pepto, Electrolytes homemade and store bought, I consulted my vet on administering banimine and la200 dosages also. she was following mom around this morning. seem to be doing good. KNOCK ON WOOD>
