Well, calves weren't supposed to start popping out for another month. My oldest cow (Angus) couldn't wait another month. Naturally I didn't have them in the field closest to the house. She was absent during the evening head-count. Took 2 hours and finally found her on the upper 60, in the woods, by dark. Some of you know how much fun it is to look for a black cow in the dark, in the woods. Anyhow, it is without a doubt a preemie. Didn't bother to get out the scale for this one, could lift it with one hand/arm. My guess about 35, 40 lbs. Heifer, really short, short hair. Took us 2 days to get that pair off that darn hill and into the pen by the working area. With any luck she'll survive. Cow is a good momma. It appears baby has had a hard time sucking, looks to me to be on the verge of dehydration. Gave her a "supplemental" bottle of a variant on Oliie's "Love potion #9". She probably would have drank twice what I offered, but I don't want her to have more problems.
Jeanne says she hates twins, I hate preemies. This isn't the first time, and probably won't be the last.
Sorry for being long winded.
Thanks for listening.
