Calf question

I had a calf born some time yesterday. He looks good, alert etc. checked yesterday afternoon and hin and mama were walking around just fine. Check this morning and the calf is off by himself resting. He still seems alert but made no effort to get up when I walked over to him. I tried nudging hin to get up as well as tried putting him up on his feet. For whatever reason I feel better when I see them moving around. I have not seem him nurse but have only checked him very briefly. Is this just something to wait and see on?

No scours and no other obvious symptoms. I have not checked his temp yet but will.

If he's not dehydrated, I would say he's just tame. :)

He seems fine now. I went an took him to mama and he is up and active now. This is only the 6th calf I've dealt with so I'm green as they come.

A lot of bull calves are pretty much inactive the first day or 2 while heifers typically are up and going.

some times hard to get them to move from where mom puts them part of them being a calf

Thanks guys, he seems healthy. I don't have a way to weigh calves but he is no doubt north of 100 lbs. That sucker was hell to carry. I have an 80 pound lab that I can pick up pretty easily if need be, this fella was all I could handle. His mama is very large cow, by far the biggest cow on my place.

It's real typical for me not to even see them until they're a week or two old and after that it can be real sporadic until they're a month or two . The cows learn to hide them and those babies learn to lay there real still. Once you get a bunch of them born at about the same time you'll start seeing babysitter cows where one cow will be hanging around by herself while the rest are out foraging. Wherever she's at, there are a bunch of babies nearby.
If you're in doubt, get near the calf and then bleat like a calf. Mom should come running or at least show some stress. Make sure you have a fence or tree nearby to climb should the need arise. :D
