New to registered cows and a few things. We have had cows all our life. Was given a calf weaner by a friend for a 7 month old heifer. The green weaner with the spikes. I assumed spikes went on pointed down. After googling images all the spikes are pointing up ?! Will the effect the effectiveness or will it be ok ?

I doubt the momma cow will like that. I believe I would try to put it in right.

If it's backwards I doubt the momma cow will mind. Calf probably won't like it though.

I am gonna fix it today. How long do I leave it on for? I have had them separated for 3 weeks. Dams bag seems to be smaller but still has some volume in it.

You only need to use a plastic weaner if you are leaving the calf with the cow.
I never really thought it was a useful management. You put it on, leave them with mom, then you still have to seperate them and take it off. Lots of messing around. Fence line weaning works super great. Cows and calves get to visit, lay next to each other. Usually takes 3 days for bawling to stop.
