Bye-bye Babies

Well, our first Galloway calves got on the truck today at 3pm. We weighed them this past Sunday on my Grandpa's scale. Steers averaged 641lbs, heifers averaged 575lbs. Being that this was our first year for Galloways, and for June/July calving, I can honestly say that I'm darn proud of what we did. These calves are right on a 210 day average age, and weighed up better than any set of calves we've raised, whether it was Angus sires or Gelbvieh.

Of course we've had a pretty mild winter, but these calves haven't had any creep, and have swath-grazed from the 3rd of November to the 1st of February. They've been bale-grazing since then. Hmmmm, and people said June calving would mean smaller calves..... :lol:

After the sale tomorrow, we'll know if their weight equates into a profit or not. I'll keep ya posted.

Well, just got back from the auction. We did pretty good for not having anything but swath/bale-grazing into them.

23 steers sold for $751 each

23 heifers sold for $660 each

They went mostly to one buyer except one group of 580lb steers, and the main buyer came to me after the sale and said, "How much grain have those calves been on"

I just smiled and told him the story behind them. He couldn't believe that they were fresh off of Momma's milk. He said he'll buy them next year when we're ready. I didn't bother telling him that next year we'll be grassing them ourselves - hopefully.
