Buying calves at a cheap price

At one of our local sales a couple Saturdays ago 300 pound yearlings (heifers, steers, and bulls) were bringing an average of .75. Now these are top quality and then some aren't worth knocking in the head. My thoughts are if I can get them for around that price (at our major sale barn they would average around 1.30) vac and worm them, put them on good hay and feed for a couple of weeks to a month or so then sale them for a good profit, or get them Saturday bring them home and feed them good and load them Tuesday morning and take them to the big sale for a smaller profit but a profit. What would yall do?

If you decide to do that there is two possible scenarios that will play out.

(1) Everyone and their brother will be there with the same idea, those .75 calves will then be 1.30 calves

(2) If you get em' at .75 they lose 25 lbs before you can sell them and only bring .75 then too.

Good luck, my thinking is they were .75 for a reason.

There is a couple reasons why they were cheap that I should have mentioned. One reason is its really dry down their way, everyone has sold out. Two no buyers. There were only twelve buyers there, half bought goats then left. There is one big buyer and he buys all the goats that no one else wants, all the hogs and almost all the calves. If you bid he won't because he doesn't want to fool with it, because he can get another for less.

300 lb. yearlings?
Seems around here a lot of folks call just about anything a yearling (pronounced yurlin') regardless of age or size. Used more as a slang word and has nothign to do with age.

There is this thing called a dictionary, southern boys need to purchase one.

Calves that sell for cheap typically have a reason for the cheap price. Cheap calves are cheap for a reason. If you are not certain as to why they are cheap you had best leave them where they are. I sold calves during this time period and a I have a few young and light weight ones that I included. We were being impacted by drought conditions but my good calves still brought $1.53/lb. I would be leary of a 75 cent/lb calf in the current market.

I notice you refrain from posting YOUR location.

BTW go ahead and be the moron who thinks that they are ignorant or just plain dumb, cuz they talk different than you do.

Its like I said before there is only one order buyer there and he pays what he wants for them. These are good yearlings. Why people take there calves there I have no idea. Now cows on the other had bring more there than anywhere else around. I think its because its a Saturday sale and everybody and their brother is there and most can't tell a cow from a bull. :2cents:
