Buy a head snare

I bought a head snare on the off chance I may need it down the road, about 6 years ago. Very glad I had it tonight. Just finished 4 hours of pulling out a dead 92 lb bull out of a heifer. It had gotten tangled in the umbilical cord and had been dead for a good time before she went into labor. Long story short, if it hadn't been for that snare, there would be a caesarean for sure and maybe even a dead heifer. Go buy one if you already don't, and add it to your arsenal.

Could have cut out 3 hours of that rodeo if I had used the snare right off the bat, rather than hoping the head would stay in place while pulling, which it didn't.
 
I think I've had a couple of them, especially in twins and malpresentations... I pay close attention now to where the umbilical cord is when I straighten out the legs... I also try and check to see if they're alive before I do anything so I don't need to kick myself with what-if's if it's doesn't come out alive.

Always sucks to lose them Aaron.. Hope the heifer recovers from the ordeal, you must both be tired!

Could you use a calving chain as a head snare? I did go out and buy a second set of chains this year.. sometimes it's mighty nice to have a second set when you've got 2 hind legs the wrong way around and have to straighten them out... especially when it's a BIG cow like the one I had that had a pair of 110 lb bull calves... 1 alive and 1 dead the next day
