Let my kids and friends camp out on the newly purchased farm. Big long lectures before they went, they are ages 18-20 and should be able to be responsible enough - basically good kids.
They had all come home this morning, but THANKFULLY, had to go back out to get one of the boy's cars that wasn't running. When they got there they saw smoke - lots of it. Called me and said they were calling the fire department.
I headed that way - takes about 35 minutes to get there. I have visions of the neighbor's home burnt , the other neighbors tobacco barn burnt, the crp field that doesn't belong to me burnt. Geez how your mind can imagine on a drive out.
When I got there the fire was out. We were very lucky. Only a small field in the back of the farm was burnt up and small portions of the woods. The boys really hadn't done so badly and every one of them went back out there to help the volunteer fire department. They had built a fire the night before, which I knew they were going to do. They had lined it with stones and even dug a trench around it. They put it all out when they left, including dumping an entire large cooler of water on it and spreading the ashes. The wind had picked up and there was the problem. Even though they had done what they did to put the fire out the wind apparently picked up some hot ash from underneath the pile - spread out but obviously not well enough. It blew on the field and burnt it up pretty quick. A small field, about an acre or so of fescue. That fescue is amazing. The field was black all over, but when walking through it there were still sprigs of green fescue that was wilted but still there.
Anyway - sitting here thinking - this might just be my opportunity to get rid of some fescue ??? Should I plant this spot now with something else ? Would I need to turn the field over or could I just spread some seed out next time it rains ? I would appreciate any ideas.
