Burned

Well my best pasture got caught up in a wild fire Sunday so I lost about 35% of what little grass I had left. Like most folks I don't have near enough hay. I usually broad cast rye grass for some winter grazing. Can this be done directly over the burnt sod? I won't try it unless we get some rain first but I can't keep the cows I have now without trying something.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear about the fire. I don't know the answer to the ryegrass question, but surely someone will. It's scary. The more grass the wildfires burn, the less of it and the less hay we will have, and hay prices will climb even higher.

I am hoping to plant some ryegrass too, but have to count on some rain. Hope you come out ok.

The planted rye will probable do better after a burn off.
If you know you are going to get rain You might want to think about have the seed down already. After the first rain your going to have a pretty good seed bank sprouting and fighting for space.

sorry to hear about some of your pasture burning off.yes you can broadcast rye grass on the burned area.we broadcast all our rye grass an clover.but id wait till you had a heavy rain.because you dont want it to rain bring it up an then not rain no more.
