What's with the scrotums on the first two?

Colder when they got their pictures taken.

Exactly right, although I didn't notice that when I posted the pictures. The first 2 were the first ones taken but they wouldn't cooperate very well so we went to look at the herd bulls for a while and came back after they all had a chance to smell every corner.

I'd got for the last one myself... I mean unless it was -30C when the first 2 had the pic taken (and it doesn't look like it by the picture), I'd say he's a little bit small, particularly if you have a hot climate at breeding time

I can't quite tell, but it seems like the last one is a little long in hind hooves..

Hi. What does the hot climate at breeding time influence? Thanks in advance.

Selection Traits - Phenotype - Genotype - Functional Traits Balanced Selections!

Selection Traits - Phenotype - Genotype - Functional Traits Balanced Selections!

I am not sure if I am reading that right Doc, but I have to put functional traits at the head of the list. By that I mean good udders, no prolapse or bad eye genes, good mothering instinct and the ability to have a calf on their own.

I balance as best I can, but everything else is after that, functional mother cows, and all my selections are looked at with the replacement females in mind.

If you don't mind me asking Doug, how do you rate them.?

That is a hard question because of the different types and numbers. I could easily make an argument for any of them depending on the herd of cows they were going with.
0064 is a better bull than the picture shows. My cows are calving across the fence and he spends most of his day checking to see if the fence has fell down. He has more muscle than 0024, but 0024 may be easier fleshing and definately has more capacity. That might be factor #1 if you graze late in the year, but if you feed hay and have some cows that need the muscle and a little extra calving ease, 0064 is better. 0025 is a good balance between all these. If BW isn't an issue, 9039 is moderate in frame with lots of muscle, a pretty complete bull but with a little more BW than I want. 9055 would be a great bull to put with a herd of black cows to make baldies.

With the cows I have, I took a good look at 0064 before I went to Jamison's. He was the gauge I used to make sure I got a bull better than him, but bloodlines preclude me from using 0024 or 0025. If I had a herd of black cows and just needed the best bull I could see, 0025 would be the one of the picture bulls that would catch my eye.

Now that I have you confused, we are in the same boat! :2cents: :2cents:

I agree Doug. I was not classifying the selection protocols in order of importance, just critically inclusive!

I thought we were on the same page but I wasn't sure. I know I have phenotype differences but hopefully they will even up with more time and selection pressure.
